I've probably seen this movie dozens of times. Without a doubt on of the best I've ever seen. Its a complete masterpiece.

However....why didn't Angier just clone himself once and use the clone as his double for each show instead of killing "himself" each time? Seems like that would be a lot simpler.

Then he would have to go thru the trouble of hiding the clone every second of the day and "live the trick" such as Borden

And he couldn't be sure he could control the clone. Just like he couldn't control his double

What the others have said, plus it was clear that Angier himself wanted to be the one out front to receive the applause. So, imagine two guys with that same ego and desire. That relationship would probably deteriorate quickly. Also, would you want another you around?

Honestly, it'd probably make things a little easier at times....

But yeah, these are all good points.

All of the above. To add that he was looking for an easy out, Cutter told him earlier when his wife died that drowning was like "going home." At the end he tells him he was lying, that it is "agony." Angier thought he was doing himself a favor, essentially.

Doesn't he kill himself everytime he does the trick. As he falls through the trap door into the water and the clone appears elsewhere?

Yes. "The Prestige" became the act of killing himself - over and over. Weakest part of the story is that he didn't dispose of "The Prestige" after every show. The risk of discovery just went up and up with each performance. Defeats the entire purpose of doing it that way, IMHO.

It is kind of sad and noble that he was willing to kill himself for his craft, and do so dozens of times.

Yes but as I mentioned above, don't you think Angier thought it was a pleasant way to do the trick since he thought drowning was peaceful, until Cutter told him otherwise at the very end?

That's how he wins. He appears to cheat death, but he's actually dying.

I'd argue that Angier actually loses. He thinks he is peacefully cloning himself but in reality he is dying an agonizing death over and over again. Not to mention Borden's reveal.

Yep. Remember when Borden sneaks under the stage and sees Angier drowning? Its as if the Angier that died realized it wasn't exactly "going home" and he wanted to be saved.
