A Most Violent Year
Posted by Patrick_Bateman on 3/12/15 at 1:53 pm00
Finally got around to watching yesterday. I was a little disappointed, to be honest; mainly because I had built up too high of expectations for it. I loved Margin Call and All Is Lost (JC Chandor's first two movies) and I had seen some comparisons between the styles of A Most Violent Year and The Godfather, so I half-expected AMVY to blow me away. It didn't quite do that, but it's still a very solid movie.
Builds tension little by little as the movie goes along. Oscar Isaac has talent, for sure. And Jessica Chastain is fricking awesome, as usual - she's quickly becoming (slash, already is) one of the best actresses in Hollywood IMO.
Overall, a solid movie. Would definitely recommend it. 7/10

You had me up till here.
I really enjoyed AMVY as well. Oscar Isaac wasn't on my radar before, but he sure is now. He has great screen presence.
I enjoyed the on-screen "darkness" in which the film was shot. It had a bit of a Hitchcockian feel.

I was kind of disappointed too. Oscar Isaac was great but the rest of the movie was nothing special.

I really wanted to like it more than I did. It was still good though. B

In my badassery, I just watched it with my mother on Netflix. I loved it. My mother thought issacs character was a pussy and that the movie was boring.

Watched it last night, I agree. I gave it a 3.5/5. It lagged a bit I thought but Oscar Issac is pretty awesome. Really liked how his character handled his business, not something I expected going in and not something you see in movies like this. That dramatic scene at the end with him stopping up the tank was great.

I'm an hour in, so far it is boring as hell. Considering going back to RedBox and getting something else.
