Is their a movie franchise that receives more criticism and love simultaneously?

Seems warranted. 8 movies and only 3.5 of them are good; one of which is a spinoff.

I've posed this question to people I know that say they love Star Wars but hate the prequels: would Star Wars be where it is today (an over $5 billion franchise) if the prequels never existed. My answer: no, because even though they are extremely flawed, they serve the purpose of creating the huge SW universe.

Without the prequels they may not be at 5 billion right now, but they could have got there anytime they wanted to.

Star Wars can just print their own money anytime they choose to.

On July 1, 1977, I went to Bob Wynn's birthday party. I was 11. We were going to see some movie at Mall St. Vincent that I had never heard of. Star what?

I remember it like it was yesterday.

They've beaten the charm out of the original film by dissecting it and expanding from the severed organs and limbs.

I preferred it as a small franchise.

40 years ago, the lines at the old Bon Marche theatre, extended down the sidewalk a couple of hundred yards. It was crazy.

Of course it would. The universe was huge already and there was a massive demand for the prequels (and now sequels) thanks to the continued love for the original trilogy, which expanded the universe (and was continued by hard core fans in the books, which... sorry to break it to y'all, are near universally terrible). If anything, the prequels contracted the universe, as the strength of the first movies were always that it hinted at a larger universe... it was the classic "used universe".

Turning the page, I think you can make a good argument Star Wars is the most influential movie ever made. You practically can divide film history into a before and after its release. Not all of its influence is good, particularly how it created the blockbuster culture in Hollywood, but its impact on moviemaking and how they are marketed cannot be understated.

I heard something today that said it opened in only 32 theatres? That can't be accurate, right?

The prequels were worth it for giving us the animated Clone Wars stories that have led into Rebels. Well, well worth it.
