Comedy sequels are notoriously tough to pull off, but 22 Jump Street was both a critical and financial success last year and another win for Phil Lord and Chris Miller, the filmmakers behind both the first Jump Street movie and The LEGO Movie.

But where does the Jump Street franchise go next? Especially given the second film’s very funny closing credit sequence, showing 22 additional “sequels” and new adventures for Schmidt (Jonah Hill) and Jenko (Channing Tatum) that could, arguably, make it difficult to then write a true sequel? Unless that is, they just ignore those credits and pretend that never really happened?

While speaking about their new FOX TV series, The Last Man on Earth, at WonderCon this past weekend, Lord and Miller gave an update on the third Jump Street film, with Miller noting, “A draft of a version is being written, currently,” by Rodney Rothman, who worked on the other two movies.

I asked the duo about the challenge of incorporating the closing credits of the second film into the story, and Lord replied, “We love doing that, apparently - just writing endings that need to be overcome somehow. Like the LEGO movie, we were like, ‘Yeah, this is a cool ending with lots of possibility. Good luck whoever has to write that!’ And we have to write it.”

When it comes to Jump Street, Miller revealed, “We found a way that we love that makes those imagined sequels canonical and yet does something that we haven’t told you about yet.”

He then comically stressed, for those wondering if they’d somehow un-do those closing credits, ”The sequels are canon!”

We'll keep you posted as we learn more about the third film, including what they'll actually call it - given the title 23 Jump Street was also used in those closing credits.

It's crazy to me that the guys who could make such pure genius as Lego and Last Man on Earth could make the steaming pile of dog shite that is jump Street.

My name Jeff might be the least funny thing in the whole movie of 22

The whole thing is hilarious tho

When Jenko found out Schmidt fricked Ice Cube's daughter, the theater didn't stop laughing for a good five minuts
