2016 MWADS Top 20: 3 Years Later

So I was checking back into some old stuff, mostly because I keep a running list of how my likes have changed over time (even in just 3 years) as I refine my own movie collection. One place to go is my old MWADS lists (Sci Fi, 80s, 90s, 70s, etc.), but he most complete is always our Top 100 overall.
So I was looking at 2013, and this was the Top 20:
1. Godfather I & II
2. Seven Samurai
3. Vertigo
4. Goodfellas
5. Casablanca
6. Lawrence of Arabia
7. Schindler's List
8. One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest
9. Star Wars
10. Once Upon a Time in the West
11. Jaws
12. Shawshank Redemption, The
13. Empire Strikes Back, The
14. Good, the Bad, and the Ugly, The
15. Citizen Kane
16. Silence of the Lambs, The
17. City of God
18. Pan's Labyrinth
19. Cool Hand Luke
20. Departed, The
Not really a bad list. It seems a couple of films might be overrated slightly, The Departed (ok highly...no way that cracks the Top 20 now), Shawshank and Pan's Labyrinth, and the Top 20 is largely sci-fi and comedy free (which is odd), but we have a couple of westerns, some great war pictures, and a bunch of dramas. It's good to see Jaws in the mix though.
Still, I think our approach is always awesome, as we set out to do the first time:

5 Years ago, we embarked on a small experiment to catalog what we thought were “Movies We Agree Don’t Suck.” We decided it wasn’t a “Best Movies Ever List,” and it wasn’t an “Our Favorite Movies List.” It sat somewhere between that discussion; it was a list that evoked the best of what film had to offer AND the ability of film to entertain. “We have a lot of different tastes and a decent amount of posters, that alone should level out inconsistencies.

Damn strong list considering all the varying opinions that went into it. I would venture to say it's the best Top 20 and Top 100 list anywhere on the internet.

Yeah, we rule!
Though I do think our list is way too heavily tilted towards "guy movies" mainly due to the biases of our voting body: we're primarily a bunch of a dudes, and the list reflects that.

This. I think it's why we really don't have a great romance in there, or a Sleeping Beauty or Wizard of Oz.

And I want to do this again, but I fear we've lost a good core group here, and this is so time consuming.
I've considered using something like a Google Form but the spelling differences will make that just as tough to sort through.

Well I guess that answers the "Should we do this again" question. Oh well.

I was thinking for the next one doing a heroes and villains list. Post 50 of each, and we each get to pick 20 villains.

No offense, but I'm not getting into that fanboy morass. This would be even worse than a straight comic movie list (not that there are enough of those anyway).
I mean, it's a good idea, but there are too many variables at play. For instance, how do you rate Superman? Reeves Superman? Routh Superman? Cavill Superman? All three? And how would votes be cast, if someone writes "Superman"what do they mean? And, how do you separate comic Superman from film Superman. Even Reeve Film Superman kind of sucks, honestly. And how does this not end up being a "blank vs. blank" discussion in about 3 posts?
Filled with landmines. This might have worked in the 2008-2010 timeframe, less people, less egos, less fanaticism.

I'd say relative to their own film and how good the movie is. I think that only Batman and the Joker would make my list on the top of my head.
But yeah, didn't think about it from the Superhero/vilain POV. I was thinking more on the lines of Atticus Finch and Norman Stansfield. It may be a worse idea since I'm sure some posters here will post at least half of them being comic book genre.

This. And while I agree, The Dark Knight was only overrated to the point of #42 on that list, so it wasn't TOO bad.
But some of us will regret it when Batman > Atticus, Lawrence, Jefferson, etc.

I think it more threatens the hero than the villain list. Aside from the Joker (really Nicholson's, Hamill's, and Ledger's Joker would all be in some sort of contention), which other supervillain in film is iconic enough to overcome some of the great villains? Maybe Magneto, but aside from the first one, he has not really been the primary antagonist in those movies.
The hero list I think would likely be screwed though. Batman, Superman, Spider-Man, Iron Man, it'd take up at least 12 slots. The only two who may deserve some placement are Batman and Captain America, and that's really it.
EDIT: We could limit it to 2 superhero and 2 supervillain inclusions to keep it interesting.

The Departed brings it down
But the best Top 19 list anywhere, yes.

I think I still stand by my top 20 from that list. Maybe bump off one or two for Ferris Bueller or Weird Science.

I'd probably be a little nicer to comedies and throw a couple of modern films on my list. It's little old weighted. But 2008 was when I was almost strictly watching every classic movie I could find, so it makes sense.
