Shadows of Dave Dravecky when he broke his arm on the mound. Zumaya threw then wheeled around and went down in agonizing pain grasping what looked like his elbow.

Update from MSNBC Sports

quote:

Joel Zumaya left Monday's game against the Twins in the bottom of the eighth inning with an apparent serious arm injury.
We hate to speculate, but it looks like he may have just blown out his arm. Zumaya was trembling in pain on the ground and was visibly wincing as he was escorted off the field. It's really a shame. Stay tuned for an official update from the team, but it's hard not to think the worst after what we just saw.

Man it's a shame to see what happened Zumaya...so much potential there, and injuries have just ravaged him. Sad story...

They haven't officially said what it was, but when he went down you could see his hand shaking uncontrollably and he was just in excruciating pain. I haven't seen a pitcher tear a ligament and look like they were in that kind of pain.

From Detroit SB Nation Blog

quote:

Joel Zumaya went down in extreme pain after suffering an arm injury of some sort against the Twins. Zumaya had to be helped off the field and was in tears because the pain was so severe.

quote:

Unfortunately, just based on how Zumaya reacted, this type of injury makes you wonder if he will ever pitch again.

Just saw the video. Does anyone remember the video of that wrestler who came off the top rope and his knee did things that no knee should ever do? It was like that, but with his arm.

Griffey Jr hit a Zumaya 104mph grand slam a few years ago didn't he?

Griffey might have. I think I remember Pujols smoking one against him too. Well I hate to say it but you could see something like this coming. Zumaya just overthrows IMO and should have toned it down a bit after injuries started effecting him. It looks like he'll at least be out for the season, but for his career, well that's yet to be seen.

Flame throwing relievers throw like that though. I know it is a shame, but it's nothing surprising really. Guys who throw pure gas for one inning are high risks to do it.

That being said, was it Steve Saunders who had that happen, made a comeback...and then had it happen again?

I'm so glad KRod can barely hit 90 on the gun anymore.

Didn't the same happen to Eric Gagne? He was never the same after his injury.

Similarly, on May 20, 2006, Zumaya gave up a grand slam to Ken Griffey, Jr. on a pitch that FSN Detroit's radar gun measured at 104 MPH.
