Here's a couple of reasons why not:

1. It's not about the money. Any notion of the Yankees sticking to a self-imposed salary cap in 2014 is already laughable and it's only December.

2. Gardner is a productive ball player. He hits well with RISP and is a monster on the base path (25 steals 2013). Above average OF with an above average arm.

3. If the Yankees need to trim the roster, why not move Wells and Ichiro, in that order. Very little downside IMO.

Remember the Russell Martin trade? In some ways, that was the beginning of the end for last year's season. No need to repeat that bonehead move with a proven performer like Gardner who will help get wins.

Well I agree, Gardner is a cheaper version of Ellsbury and this Ellsbury was not needed. But I'm high on Gardner...

NY is only paying Wells like $2.5-million. Ichiro should go first.

Well, Wells is useless at least Ichiro can pinch run/play defense

It is about the money. Assuming an arbiter holds up Arod's suspension, they have a good shot at being under the luxury tax line next year, which would bring their penalty down from 50% to something like 17%. Avoiding the repeater tax will be huge for the Yankees moving forward, so they definitely have some incentive to move Gardner.

While I don't think they should trade Gardner, the other two guys can't be considered everyday guys at this point, so I doubt they'd get much for them. Gardner would at least net some reasonable talent.

Yeah. I don't know how I would manage it. Neither of them are likely to start this year with Gardner, Ellsbury, and Soriano (I reallllly like that OF as long as Ellsbury stays healthy). Ichiro is marginally better, but he just turned 40 and is he worth 2.5x as much as Wells? It all depends on how tight they are with the budget I guess.

No. I don't.

Dodgers non-tendered him.
NY signed him as a free agent.
Pittsburgh signed him as a free agent.

your answering your own question

Ichiro and wells have zero value, a bag of dirty balls is all your getting for them

Gardner is the piece that can get you a need, in return.

Even then it doesn't make sense.

Kuroda, Nova, Andy, and even Hughes have been at least as good in 12 & 12 as AJ was his last 2 seasons in NY.

Good god, no. Burnett was a boat anchor. Martin was a gamer, trade or no. I stand by my analogy:Dumping Gardner would be as brainless as letting Martin get away.

Because he has only 1 year left on his contract and the could use some young players.

And the youngest starter on the team.... Yankees are old and they have nothing in the farm system at the moment. Shocking since that same farm system was considered Top 5 just 2 seasons ago....

Which is not young. Who else do that have that's tradeable?
How's that pitching staff looking?

Our best prospects are C, OF, and pitchers but they're all in low ball.

Other than that nothing.

They'll be fine if CC rebounds. Kuroda is solid. Nova had a really good season last year. IDK about Phelps. I think he could be a solid back end guy. Pineda should pitch this year. There's potential.

I'm not going to shut the book on Banuelos and Bettances yet, but their stock has plummeted.

Montero is gone and he was our top guy. Too early to tell on Romine IMO. Sanchez looks solid.

I figured they'd sign Garza or someone.
