8:11am: The Cubs scouted 24-year-old Triple-A right-hander Chase Whitley over the weekend, tweets Joel Sherman of the New York Post. Whitley has a 3.52 ERA with 8.7 K/9 and 3.1 BB/9 in 38 1/3 innings this season.

The way that Junior Lake has been playing the last few nights, they might be planning on keeping him up for the rest of the season. Went 4-5 last night with an absolute mammoth homerun to dead center, 2 bunt singles and an RBI single late in the game that gave the Cubs a key insurance run. He is in an incredible athlete and looks very comfortable playing in the big leagues. IF Soriano get traded I could see Junior Lake starting the rest of the season. Hell, I could see it even if Sori doesn't get traded.
I totally forgot about Lake, but I can agree that he would be the regular LF if Soriano gets traded. DeJesus is due back real soon and hopefully we'll see Sappelt get sent away.

I think that was always the plan, could mean he's doing less platoon duty and has more of a home in LF if sori moved.

Look, I don't know what kind of future Lake has at the MLB level but just watching him swing and hit that HR last night reminded me of how I reacted when I see Javy Baez swing a bat. The guys just look really athletic. It's almost like all they need is to be sharp between the ears and they'll be solid MLB players.

Well they said his stay would probably be short lived with DeJesus coming back possibly by the end of the week so I don't know. My guess is that if he had struggled and hit .200, they would have shipped him back down when DeJesus came off the DL. No point in letting a guy that isn't ready sit up in the big leagues and struggle every day.

I think his home will actually be CF. With his speed and athleticism I quickly see him possibly becoming the CF of the future for the Cubs.

Watching him play is pretty awesome - I stayed up way to late to watch the end of that game last night and was rewarded with him ripping an RBI single . Gives hope that some of these guys in the minors will pan out and allow the Cubs to contend. He is the first Cub to have 9 hits in his first 4 games since 1943.

I doubted that they'd move him back down before the trade deadline and i would ahve bet my bottom dollar we traded at least one between dejesus, nate, and sori so he was always going to have a place to play, even if spelling IF folks too. Also i don't think anyone is too attached to bourbon so if he showed quickly he could play CF i think we'd have dumped bourbon first (and in all honesty, having borbon on the team really doesn't make sense to me).

Everyone always says watchout for the dr. jekle mr. hyde version of lake. Hopefully that doens't happen.

Can't remember the writer but he said something tot he effect that "if you told me in 5 years that junior lake would be a perenial allstar i'd believe it, if you also told me in five years that he'd be batting .260 as a AAA player i'd believe that too.

ETA actual quote from John Sickles: “If you told me that Lake will be an All-Star four years from now, I’d believe it. If you told me he would be flailing at breaking pitches in Triple-A four years from now, I’d believe that too.”

If not before september call ups, certainly after, the cubs will platoon them at 3b based on right/lefty matchups.

Right now he'll go to AAA to try to improve that K rate...but it wouldn't surprise me if they (like i believe texas was doing) try to gethim some OF experience.

Barney is rumored to be on the trading block.

Barney has been rumored to be on the trading block for over a year. I believe Thoyer overvalues him and he will not be going anywhere. He absolutely should be the one traded away, but other teams know we are stocked with middle infielders in the minors and won't offer anything of value for him.

I think that's the thing, barney sucks, only a team who has no need for a bat and only a defensive 2b would trade for him...and then they'd offer a bag of balls...can't see how a trade ever happens and login watkins isn't exactly knocking at the door right now, so play him.

Oh yay it's you. It went over the 413 mark just to the left of the higher center field fence. Glad you came to contribute some of your dickhole comments though.

I can't wait to see the yankees crash and burn as they desperately hold on and sign every old guy they can think of.

I've watched every inning of all 4 games since the All Star Break, good try though. If it makes you feel better as a person to say the homerun that Junior Lake hit last night travelled to left center field instead of center field then go for it Lester - anything to make you a little less miserable of a frick.

10:31am: A Cubs source tells Paul Sullivan of the Chicago Tribune that the two sides are indeed negotiating a Soriano trade, but a deal is not close at this time. The conversations to this point have been closer to preliminary, according to Sullivan, though he notes that both sides appear motivated to get something worked out
