WSJ: Is Seattle Too Civilized to Win Big in College Football?

Kenyon said he wasn't sure whether Washington could ascend to that level again, but even the longtime booster doesn't live and die with what happens on the field. Seattle isn't the South. "My nickname's not Bubba," he said.

The most striking thing about a football game here at the University of Washington is what surrounds it.
Fans arrive not just by car and foot but by yacht. From the grandstands of Husky Stadium, they can see the rippling waters of Lake Washington and the crown of Mount Rainier. The school's acclaimed medical center sits across the street among spires of evergreens, part of an institution ranked among the nation's top 20 public schools. In the distance rises the skyline of Seattle, one of the world's most dynamic and forward-thinking cities.

Is this kind of like the Falcon fans bragging about fortunate 500 companies?

One of the comments...

I live in Seattle and have for all but three of my 47 years. Here is the problem in a nutshell. It is not that Seattle is "too civilized." Hardly. Come up here and look. Dress casual is a huge STEP UP from what passes for attire here. You also will find more females with tattoos than you will find males with tattoos in probably any other city. Really. And, oh ya, we recently legalized pot, and the main newspaper in town, which pushed the initiative non-stop, seems to still be able to find nothing much else to write about then what the wonders and issues will be with "legal pot," which of course is not legal, regardless of what the state says, but that is an entirely different issue. As an aside, we are now also the U.S. city with the most gay couples.
No, as indicated, "civilized" is about the last thing Seattle is. PASSIVE-AGGRESSIVE, however, is an entirely different matter. Furthermore, I believe Seattle truly is the female capital of the world. Really. And I do not necessarily mean that negatively. Just simply as a fact. So you throw everything together and you get wimpy males amongst the freak-show Seattle has become, and you also get, in turn, no great community push for sporting excellence. Er, I mean male sporting excellence. The women's professional basketball team. which we kind of got stuck with after we got punked out of our men's professional team (Oklahoma City did not want the women's team, even though it was owned by the same entity as the Sonics) is held to high standards. Between puffs of pot and bike rides that is.

I was in Seattle last week, but the fans of both UW/Seahawks were pretty damn cool, I thought. Pretty knowledgeable as well.

Most college title contenders toil in rural towns with few distractions and little else to holler about. They play in front of fans who are ambivalent about off-field shenanigans and in some cases, academics. Husky fans seem to see themselves differently—at least this time around. If they're going to win football titles, they're going to do it without compromising their dignity.

Congrats on doing what Tennessee does and thinking that makes you cosmopolitan.
No comprende.. Seattle pro fans support their teams like no other. Playing at the Seahawks is louder than anywhere and they sell out soccer games on occasion (80K+ crowds).
UW just needs to tap more into the redneck element that certainly exists up there alongside the hipsters.

Interesting article with some fun tidbits but ultimately kind of slanted and inaccurately paints a picture that it has to be one way or the other.
This part was funny and a fair point, though.

There are Microsoft and Amazon executives taking actual yachts to UT's games? You sure it's not just hicks in little boats?

Didn't this school produce Jerramy Stevens?

Where was that in your quote?
And no, I didn't read the article because I don't need to hear more people talk about how they're superior to people in the south because they have different hobbies.

If this article from back in the day is true, it's a good thing they've turned over a new leaf and become civilized.

But more than anything else, it was the top-ranked Husky football team that kept the school's name in front of the rest of the nation. At the start of the year, the topic was the team's No. 1 national ranking. Lately, it's been less celebratory matters:
Quarterback Billy Joe Hobert's $50,000 loan. Linebacker Dainanke Smith's arrest on charges of drug-dealing and Uzi-hawking!!!! (emphasis mine)

I think that's true.
I think that's what hurts Texas too.

Yeah, plus having one of the two guys who was told to disassociate himself from the program back in the picture is a sure sign they're trying to do it the right way.

I put this in a translator program is this is what it spit out: "We cannot win at football so we will make ourselves feel better by claiming a false sense of superiority in other aspects."
"forward thinking city"?
