I do not follow baseball much aside form minimally following the Tigers and am unsure of the following:

Do countries (specifically the U.S.) have their best players playing in the World Baseball Class and, if so, are the games taken seriously? Or, do most of the best players decline participation (as often the case with Olympic basketball) or not play to their potential (as with the NBA All-Star Game)?

The best players in the US aren't all playing.

ETA: if our best pitchers were on the team, other teams would barely hit the ball.

No. The us does not have the best players playing but they have many very good players. It actually makes for a better team.

I was actually surprised with the lineup we put out there. Guys like Posey, Stanton, Adam Jones, McCutchen, etc. They interviewed Jones after the game and he seemed really serious and the team went nuts after the 3rd out. Looking forward to tonight.

the US doesn't. They have a lot of very good players but no not the best. A lot of other countries do have their best playing

yes, very. the games have been awesome thus far

The classic is actually planned very well as far as when it's scheduled. Scheduling it during spring training is perfect because these guys would be playing spring training games regardless. it's not like olympic basketball where these guys are being asked to play in an event that eats into their already short off season

The pitching staffs and bench spots are tricky. You want guys getting at bats in spring training so it's hard to have a true bench without sacrificing the quality of play. Teams especially don't want young guys sitting on the bench for the USA or DR when they could be getting regular at bats with their spring training team

The pitching is always going to be weird and tough to get the best guys. There is just no way around that. Baseball does not lend itself well to an international competition with professionals no matter how you set it up. I feel like they have done the best they can

I was at Kirby Ice House in Houston last Friday and a group of 30/40 Porta Ricans were in there going nuts for the game.

some do, like the DR. some dont, like the US and japan

they all seem to be taken pretty seriously by everyone in the tournament. obviously, less so here as you barely have any discussion of it outside of the baseball specific media places

this is how it is for the US

honestly it seems like there is a whole lot of pressure being put on the trouts, harpers, kershaws, syndergaards, bryants of the world to get these level of guys to participate in 2021. i really hope we finally achieve a breakthrough with that level of players because its the only way the tournament will truly be taken seriously in this country

I think Japan uses it to showcase players still at home too, which is kind of cool.

Not to be confused with the strikingly similar Puerto Ricans

That defies logic. Makes zero sense. It does not make for a better team

You don't play your best 9 players you play your best team

No shite.

Now tell me how replacing Chris Archer with Kershaw makes the team worse. Or replacing Mccutchen with Trout.

Because Trout and Kershaw weren't there so stupid analogy if they don't want go all out then it's no use having them.

Last time they sent an All Star only team they didn't make it out of prelims

The pitching has never been the issue in these things

Stupid analogy?
This whole thread is about the best players not playing in the WBC.
My response was to someone who said we were better for not having the best players on the team. Of course Kershaw and Trout aren't there. That's what the whole thread is about, dumbass

Dumbass? No, I know what the thread is about and this WBC team is the best one they've sent if you add Trout or Kershaw you don't necessarily get this team. McCutchen and Jones have carried this team since Miami it was Zelich in Miami.

If you'd watch the whole tournament you'd get why Trout Harper or Kershaw weren't needed this time.
The most talented team didn't make it out of San Diego.

Right, you don't get this team. You get a better team

Your argument is pretty stupid. Better players don't make the team worse

McCutchen has .176 OBP in the WBC. Jones is at .226. I get that they have had some timely hits, but this would be a better team with Trout and Harper.
