Dustin Brown is asking for the same ball back after serving against Nadal. I Don't watch every match in TV, but catch a good bit of the Grand Slams and have never seen this before. Is this common? is there a rule governing requesting a specific ball?

No, it's just a superstition/OCD thing. A lot of guys want it back after something good happens.

The player can request a specific ball. Often times a player will have a ball in their pocket and 2 in their hand and do a real quick inspection of the 2 in their hand and toss one back to the ball kid. I find it hard to believe but supposedly McEnroe used to keep track of the location of balls he liked and balls he didn't like during the course of a match.

It can be a superstition thing, or it can be some balls are sometimes more fluffed up then others

Yep, whatever they can use to keep themselves comfortable they will do so. Lots of superstitions, head games, & mental blocks going on in an individual sport like tennis.

Seems like tennis balls with a little less nap on them would possibly have less drag and maybe travel a hair faster?

Yeah, John McEnroe was way too laid back to be so obsessive over something like that.

I always wondered how they could do this. That would bother the shite out of me.

Probably the reason I don't play professionally....

I am always interested to know who goes through more balls on a game/match basis, MLB vs. ATP.

The first set of balls in grand slams (6. I believe) is changed after seven games and from there it is changed every 9 games.
So a 40 games match goes through 30 balls
