I grew up watching Connors, McEnroe, Agassi, Courier, and Sampras. Many people thought Roddick would be the next guy up but he ended winning just one Major.

Serena Williams says hello.

Oh, sorry, I thought you asked if there would ever be another dominant American man in tennis. My bad.

I'm not confident after how much the media hyped up Donald Young compared to what he has actually accomplished.

We all knew he had no chance to be anything special

Legit question--who actually is the best male American tennis player? John Isner?

Nobody plays tennis anymore here.

The fad of the 70's and 80's has died out in the US.

The kids who grew up in that glory period have all since retired.

Unless tennis becomes popular again, I don't see it ever happening.

It sucks that when he was in his prime, so was Federer.

This is wrong on so many levels.

There is a big wave of 16-18 year old Americans coming up right now who have had great success in the junior ITF's and now are doing well in the futures and some in challengers. Now, that doesn't necessarily mean that all these kids, or really any of them, are going to pan out on the pro tour or become a top 5 dominant player, but the USTA has invested a ton of money in the junior development the last 15 years and this up and coming group are the ones who have reaped the benefits and the results, thus far, appear to be promising.

Kovlov (17) and Donaldson (18), two who people are expecting to be the next stars, will be playing in the first round in Memphis' ATP tournament this week. Kozlov has a very different style of play and his lack of size is what gives some people pause when discussing this future success on the tour. Donaldson looks to have it all, except in his head and his on-court attitude. Tiafoe, Mmoh, Baughton, Opelka, Fritz are all names of American 16-18 years who may break through in the very near future.

It is anyone's guess what's in store for these kids as they transition to the pro tour, but the outlook for American men hasn't looked this good since the late 80's/early 90's.

Nope... Young men are into other things in this day and age. Plus being THAT good at tennis means hard work for long periods of time. Most lazy American young men would rather play on their phone or stay inside and play video games...... Plus Tennis is an individual sport. Most spoiled American punks could not handle the fact that failure is all on them.. No teammate to blame.

Once Serena Williams retires, tennis will be dead in America for good. It'll be like what horse racing is today.

I doubt we're missing out on too many studs due to video games and laziness. Most people with good athletic genes are generally steered into sports one way or another.

What's really going on is that the rest of the world is catching up. Our best athletes do football, basketball, baseball, etc. All these people from the Balkans and Eastern Europe pretty much have tennis or few other options. The Spaniards are also making a concerted effort to push tennis in addition to soccer. The fact is that these other countries care more about tennis than we do. The British tennis federation paid Brad Gilbert to coach Andy Murray because they were so obsessed with having another male winner. Furthermore there are plenty of great individual athletes in the US: Think about all our swimmers, golfers, gymnasts, skaters, etc.

Here is a link to a youtube clip of two of the up and coming American juniors. Both are 17, although Kozlov was 16 in this clip and just turned 17 last week.

Kozlov has been pegged as a future star since he was 12/13. He played in 2 junior grand slam finals last year and is having success in both the futures and challenger. The kid has all the shots in the book. But the concern with him going forward to develop into a "dominant" player on the next level is his lack of size. He is in the main draw of tomorrow's Memphis ATP tournament as a 17 year old and will be playing another junior, Jared Donaldson, in the first round.

Taylor Fritz is another 17 year old American junior who is the son of two former pros and, unlike Kozlov, he has size on his side with his 6'4 frame. I see a little of Pistol Pete in him with his huge serve and big forehand. One thing I like about him vs. Kozlov and Donaldson is you don't see all this crappy gamesmanship, medical time outs, and whining that you see with Kozlov and Donaldson.
