Kwame's a pretty good low post defender and an ox in the paint.

There's more to basketball than scoring points.

Of course, he's still overpaid, but probably not by that much.

You realize this doesn't matter, right?

Players get a set portion of the revenues. (technically now there's a band, but that's besides the point)

Kwame getting $7m only affects other NBA players, not the owners. The Owners still will pay out the same amount to all NBA players.

Also, that you seem to pay scale should be attached to points per game is very humorous. There's much more to the game than that.

Not many 7 ft people who can play low post defense in the world. Not a terrible deal for him.

they lost money by non-basketball expenses going up drastically more than anything else

but the players get a certain % of revenue. if they make more, they pay the owners the difference out of the escrow account. if they make less, the owners cut checks

7 million for a 6'11" center that can't move well and can't shoot in his 11th season.

or

you could pay jason smith probably a million, 6'11" that moves well and can shoot.

can you really tell me that kwame brown is so much better and valuable than jason smith?

yeah, this is why the NBA loses money.
just b/c your allowed to spend the money on them, doesn't mean you should.

you telling me kwame brown was that sought after that they had to offer him 7million? it's the idiot owners fault they pay these guys this much.
you could probably find 4 players that are each better than kwame for that price.

what happens when a company has a loss in revenue?
they find places to cut back. quit paying stephon marbury 20 million. quit paying a hurt gilbert arenas 20 million. quit paying steve francis 20 million.

20 million dollars for one player should get you into the playoffs at least every year single handedly

You're talking about on a per team basis though. For the NBA as a whole entity it doesn't matter that Steve Francis is getting paid 20 million bc that just means some other players will be getting less.. If you paid him 15 million, then that other $5 million would just be split between all the other players.

The league as a whole guarantees the players as a whole will receive a certain percentage of the revenues. How the players split that revenue is every man for himself.

well, kwame is a much better defender, rebounder, and a more efficient shooter (vastly higher TS%)

total player salary is set. how it is divided is up to the owners

How much of a better defender? 7x's better?
He's better to have to defend against Howard and Bynum, and that's about it. Do you really need to pay a guy 7 million to defend Dwight Howard?
He's no better against other centers than jason smith would be, and smith would at least stretch the floor and hustle his arse off.

so they feel obligated to overpay someone just to get closer to the cap?
that's how government offices run. stupidly.
that's not how normal buisness's run.
just b/c my office has $14,000 left in their budget for the year and we need a new copy machine doesnt' mean we should pay $14,000 for a copy machine when a capable one can be bought for $3,000.
