the thing about ali is that he's kind of like thomas jefferson

he said so much shite out of both sides of his mouth, that you can take your side and find a quote from him to match it

you can see ali go from happy go lucky ali to NOI ali like a snap of the finger. this change didn't always occur

was this interview before or after NOI killed Malcolm X?

I watched it.

There are a lot of pissed off people that want to assign the blame of their anger to others.

Easiest target is the people that are least like them.

Lower level intellects of all races do it to make themselves feel better.

Don't let it bother you so much.

as I have mentioned numerous times yesterday, don't need to watch it, Ive probably seen it already along with all the others and I have come to the conclusion like all the others that you cannot take the man seriously and anybody that does is a fool.

you put a camera in front of him and suddenly it's showtime, he will say anything and everything to draw attention to himself, they probably was some craziness there to him like Liston said long ago, but you can't beat him for sheer entertainment alone.

He couldn't stand the fact that Ali was praised for not fighting for his country.

He was not praised. He was vilified by many. Ignored by more. Praised by very very few.
BTW, it's Joe Louis. Ali was greatly influenced by Louis' financial meltdown. Joe's widow was supported by Max Schmelling to avoid bankruptcy. Ali did a good job of keeping his finances in order.

This might not be the popular response but think about the situation. A black man is forced to go fight a war for a country he felt did not support him. The only way for him to avoid this was to change his religion right? Like him or not, he did what he felt was in his best interest.

His country got involved in a war many felt they should have stayed away from, then they were going to force people to go fight?

Don't get me wrong, I support my country but sometimes you have to look at both sides.

You're assuming too many connections that didn't happen at the time. Ali felt that his being drafted was racially motivated. He was probably right since we didn't have a lottery in those days and the MAJORITY of males did NOT get drafted.

Ali attempted to use his Muslim status as an excuse but I don't think that was his motivation for turning Muslim. If it was, then he would have rejected Islam after the war was over.

Ali was not subjected to the racism of the prior generation. So the idea of "an America that did not support him" is more applicable to WWII vets. Ali was making a fortune before the draft issue came up. America was very much supporting him.

draft dodging?
a lot of people on here mention that, they try to rationalize being a loyal, law abiding american as someone who serves his country, when they don't look at the whole picture, don't understand the tensions of those times, the fact that that war was hotly protested from the jump, and as Ali said black people were heavily villified in those days. had Ali grew up in Joe Louis's times, we may not even be havin this conversation.

I was faced with the draft in the late 60s. I expressed my intentions to my peers at the time. I will not enlist. If drafted, I will serve. I did not get drafted.

I really don't care for him. He's not even one of my favorite all time athletes, didn't even make the list.
