Why is Lebron not a favorite for MVP?

Cleveland was a bad team last year, and as teams with Lebron on the roster always do, have improved dramatically and are now in title contention. Others like Harden and Curry are having good years, but Lebron is still averaging 27/7/6 on 49% shooting and again turning a previously mediocre team into a dominant, high seeded playoff team. Lebron is essentially compared to himself however, and his numbers are a little down for his standards. Still, his numbers stack up favorably to any other player having their best season.

People take Lebron for granted. He's been the best player in the league for a long time, and for whatever reason voters want to have a new face as the MVP every few years. Rose won in 2010 but Lebron arguably had a better season, from a statistical standpoint at least. It reminds me of 93 and 97 when Barkley and Malone won MVP. Jordan still averaged 30 and everyone knew he was the best player in the world, but there's this underlying need to give it to the other guy in basketball for some reason. Is this another case of MVP charity?

I agree with the overall message, but you act like this is the same Cleveland team from last year that lebron has walked into

You're right about it being much different than even the start of the season, and even though they started out slowly would likely have figured something out if we consider historical trends of Lebron's teams since his second year.

I always said the same with Shaq. From 98 to 03 there is not a GM in the league that wouldn't start his team with Shaq.

Another way to look at it is last year's Heat team won 54 games with Wade sitting out 28. This year they're several games below .500 and in a fight for one of the last two playoff spots. That's including the addition of Hassan Whiteside and adding Goran Dragic in midseason, yet they're still gonna be 25+ games worse than last year.

That's the LeBron effect.

Has he been that much better than Curry and Harden to overcome having missed double digit games?

No, he's not. The team is 2-8 without him. And sucked arse at the beginning of the year. Lebron is without a doubt the most valuable player in the NBA. Yet he's not even talked about for the award this year. "Is Lebron possibly getting close to being in the discussion for the MVP?" <------- the only time his name is close to MVP talk.

His numbers shite on Curry's. He should be neck and neck with Harden, with Harden leading. But he's nowhere close.

steph gets 23.7/7.9/4.3 with a PER of 28, a TS% of .63 and has a .292 win share over 48 minutes. Lebron gets 25.8/7.3/5.8 with a PER of 26.2, a TS% of .583 and has a .201 win share over 48 minutes. I don't know about that

I guess the question is how many games would Houston have won without Harden this year?

No Howard for a large stretch and Houston is .5 games back of the 2 slot. Curry has been awesome and Westbrook has been a beast. And those 3 do it in the West

The Cavs were 2-8 without him because they weren't even that great with him at that time when he missed like 8 games and they went 1-7.

They were 18-12 on the season at that point.

So take a mediocre team who isn't clicking and take away their best player, and it's no wonder they lost a bunch of games when LeBron went out.

People are acting like they were some unstoppable force, and then LeBron gets hurt and they lose a bunch of games because he wasn't there.

They weren't nearly as good at that time as they are now.

Being the best in the world doesn't mean you are having the best season.

Come on man...

Yea they wouldn't be as good as they were without LBJ. Everyone knows that.

But Bosh is out for the year and played in 44 games all year. Wade has still missed over 20 games this year. Whiteside has only played 41games all year and only played 20+ mpg in like 25 games. He emerged a little bit before the All Star break. And Dragic has only played 17games with them.

If they were healthy most of the year, they would have won more than 45games most likely. And Bosh being out for half the season is what really hurt them.

They most likely wouldn't have won 54games or whatever, but they would have won way more than 33 if they were healthy and would be closer to 54 wins than 33 wins.

And why is LBJ not the favorite to win the MVP? Because he's missed a decent amount of games and took of a few weeks early in the season, Cavs have struggled this season and so has LBJ. Go look at the advanced metrics. This has been LBJs worst season since his rookie year. His Win Shares are the lowest since his rookie year and this is his highest season in turnovers and turnover %.. It's a down year for LBJ, which is ridiculous to say because it's still an awesome season for everyone else, and Curry and Harden have stepped their game up to another level and have been for the entire season.

This might be the dumbest thing I've ever said, but switch them, and what team is better? Lebron is miles and miles and miles better than Curry. And more important to his team than Curry is. I wish I knew more about basketball....because as is...I'm not intelligent enough to argue back with you

Golden State, but a Kyrie/Curry backcourt would be jaw dropping.
