Is there a legitimate reason?

This may have been true in the 80's and 90's, but it has stabilized in recent years.

At the very least, Grambling would've made a run in the playoffs this year.

They do compete just MEAC doesn't send champion

The SWAC thinks the schools make money off a champ game

The Celebration Bowl is more lucrative than getting curbstomped in the first round of the playoffs.

at the downvotes, Grambling was a Devante Kincade injury away from beating Arizona and going undefeated this year, they almost certainly would've won a game or two in the playoffs this year.

The Bayou Classic is more lucrative and better marketing tool than the playoffs.

Delaware State got in a few years ago and got absolutely clobbered by Delaware. Norfolk State had the same thing happen against Old Dominion. Grambling might be really good this year, but Arizona was a really, really bad team.

Grambling would've been drilled in the first round they are no match for most good FCS teams. Their story is a good one this year but NC A&T who was ranked highly all year went and got blitzed in a first round game.

Also they struggled with a 6-6 Alcon team 2 weeks ago.

Actually I thought the black colleges used to have a lot of talent back in the day. Many NFL players went there.

Southern and Grambling make more money off the Bayou Classic than they would in the playoffs

NLU beat Alcorn St when they had McNair something like 78-27. Big talent gap

I'm sure it's pretty exciting for the players to be able to play on NFL fields as opposed to losing at South Dakota State or somewhere

More money and exposure by being in the Celebration Bowl, which was the Heritage Bowl back in the day.

Also as stated, the MEAC sends a team some years. The SWAC plays 3 games after the start of the playoffs (Bayou and Turkey Day Classics, and SWAC championship game) which earn them more money and better attendance than all FCS playoff games combined.

The SWAC and Ivy League are the only conferences who don't send their teams to the playoffs.

It was 66-19 I think and they had Jerry Rice and Willie Toten. Threw on every play, no huddle. My freshman year.

We then stomped Alcorn the next week before beating Middle Tennessee and losing to Montana State in IAA finals in charleston
