Why do great College coaches suck so much in the NFL?

Chip Kelly, Steve Spurrier, Nick Saban all dominated CFB but were bad/average NFL coaches. Pete Carroll was a 2 time NFL coach before coming to USC so he doesn't count and Harbaugh played/worked in the NFL before coming to College. Jimmy Johnson is the only College coach that I can think of that was successful in the pros?

Are they outmatched in terms of x's and o's, bad at picking players or something else?

coaching 18-22 year olds against other 18-22 year olds versus coaching grown men who have more money than you and don't like being yelled at

in college you can hoard talent and you have 85 scholarships, better depth, etc. NFL you have salary caps, roster limits, etc

They are almost completely different

Off the top of my head I'd say a big reason is they don't have the recruiting advantages like many big-program, successful CFB coaches have in college (see Nick Saban). The other difference is they can't adjust to dealing with college vs. pro players. Jimmy Johnson talked about this one time but he was able to make the adjustment.

It's a different game.

Has nothing to do with X's and O's.

Because it's much tougher to get grown arse men who get paid millions to execute your gameplan that you think will change the landscape of football.

And I think it could depend some on where you come from. Pete carol and Jimmy Johnson succeeded at both levels but they were coaching early 00s usc and 80s canes. These players were already banging supermodels and cruising on yachts. They basically had to deal with an NFL players ego in college or the closest thing to it. That was probably part of the reason the transition was easier for them.

Coached first in the NFL, 3 times...db, wr and OC coach before going to Stanford as HC where he sucked - especially his second-stint in the 90s after the Niners.

There's a small handful that were great in college and Pros.

Johnson
Carroll

It is because the college game is still a game and is played just like it has since the players were in Jr high. Coach is the be all to everything

The NFL is a business and the coaches are dealing with men that are being paid to do a job. Coach is just part of the company.

This is your problem, they didn't suck (aside from Spurrier) Chip had a lot of offensive success his first two years, and Saban wasn't as bad as this board will have you believe.

Recruiting > Drafting

Also if you have the personality where you need to control every aspect of everything it only really works in College.

Remember when everybody said Pete Carroll was a failure in the NFL when he was at USC?

pro coaches that go to college haven't done so hot either-

Dave Wannstedt, Bill Callahan, Forrest Gregg, Charlie Wiess, Jerry Glanville, Dennis Green was 26-63 as a college coach.

Because they didn't have good QBs.
