Why Didn't Bama Tackle Clemson's Recievers on the Last Play?

Why didn't Saban just take the penalty and force overtime instead of giving Clemson a free shot at a TD in addition to Overtime insurance instead of making them choose between them?

They could have just tackled all recievers and then the same play would be run, but with only enough time for one play.

good question. I think that was done in the end of the FSU/Mich game.

They basically did. That's why the guy out of the flat was so wide open.

Maybe they thought they were good enough to stop the play. Given the chance do you play for the win or play not to lose? Most competitors given the choice, would play to win.

Its always easier in hindsight to say this or that should have been done.

If they would have defended the play and won the game would you be saying the same thing?

Tackle all receivers and leave the edges wide open for a QB run?

I think the outside WR was being held. So maybe the CBs were instructed to so so.

Are you Rip Van Winkle? This has been discussed quite a bit.

You are woefully confused. It had nothing to do with "playing to win".... They simply allowed them the choice to run 2 legitimate plays instead of 1.

Clemson's offense in a college overtime situation was better than Bama's offense without Bo. So IMO you play that last play to win the game, not tie and chance OT

A game cannot end on a defensive penalty. The final result was inevitable.

I don't think you understand the question being posed here. The theory is that with 6 seconds left, Bama commits penalties across the field to make sure that Clemson doesn't score. Time ticks off clock. Now, either Clemson gets one untimed down or there is 1 second on the clock. Highly likely they just kick the field goal for the tie at that point.

Or Bama tackles all the Clemson receivers, and considering it was a roll out by Watson, he walks into the end zone untouched

Clemson would have gotten another play due to defensive penalty.

ps - and ball would be 1/2 distance to the goal if I'm not mistaken

Because Bama's coaches suck, Everyone knows tackling all the receivers is always a great plan.

Like Clemson wouldn't kick the FG with 1 sec left.

The ball would have been placed at the 1 yard line. I bet 50% of coaches would go for the win from the 1 yard line.

It's like you didn't even read his full post. No shite they get another play. But now there's only enough time to kick a field goal or go for the win. Not that I don't think Watson would have probably scored on the play where Bama holds everyone, but some of you people can't even grasp the theory that is being discussed here.

I understand it just fine, frickface. Look at my edit above. If the ball is moved to the 4 and 1/2 yard line after the penalty, Clemson would probably have gone for it instead of a FG. Capiche?
