got a job in TV and tried to be the new madden. unfortunately he wasn't a clown, just a dry analyst, and didn't reach the madden heights

walsh himself later admitted he left too early

A source familiar with television-industry negotiations estimated that NBC would pay Walsh $750,000 a year, or more than double what he would have received from the 49ers.

Texas should hire him.

Dead Bill Walsh > Mack Brown.

Niners would probably have another 2 or 3 Super Bowls had he stuck around another 5-7 years

You gotta know when to hold em, and know when to fold em.

Burnout. Walsh was a genius but he didn't have the insatiable desire for winning like a Phil Jackson, John Wooden, Alex Ferguson, Scotty Bowman.

he was also a fairly terrible commentator

all his stories revolved around joe montana - which was kinda annoying if you were interested in the game being played

I heard that he believed that you should not be at an organization for more than 10 years. More money makes more sense though.

Didn't he go to Stanford after that? Plus George Seifert was waiting in the wings

So Walsh made 300K or so and Sumlin gets 5 million? Seems legit.

His replacement won 2 SuperBowls, 6 divison tiles and 77% of his games.

And they probably would have won four or five Super Bowls if they had hired Mike Holmgren instead.

yeah Siefert was a great replacement. The only thing that prevented the 49ers from winning more Super Bowls was other excellent teams like the Cowboys, Giants, and Packers winning the Super Bowl instead.

Yep. There were some insanely talented teams back in the early/mid 90's,

Personally I think Walsh had such a crush on Montana he would have refused to phase him out for Young... and that would have meant only one more Super Bowl win instead of the two more that Siefert managed.

I doubt it, having those kind of numbers are amazing considering that was in the middle of Jimmy Johnson's Cowboy run.
