Why couldn't Rich Rod win at Michigan?
Posted by Henry Jones Jr on 10/3/14 at 2:41 pm20
It makes no sense to me. He was very successful at West Virginia and in his third year at Arizona, he is building a program that could win the conference already.
What was different at Michigan?

Easy. He wasn't a "Michigan Man".

Talent on the defensive side of the ball was largely lacking, and the few good defensive players they had under him were mostly Lloyd Carr recruits.

Well that's the best explanation.
I don't remember his recruiting classes there so maybe that had something to do with it. Then again, I don't remember ever being very good at recruiting.

Cause his players didn't care about the minute details. They wouldn't even tie their own shoelaces!!

He couldn't get past his 3-3-6 (if I recall correctly) in the big ten.
He got run all over and they couldn't stop the pass with 6 DBs. He is a much better fit for the PAC-12.

Well you can say recruiting rankings but the lack of "buy-in" by the administration that hired him didn't help in wins or recruiting

His defenses were historically bad

He had holdovers that weren't fit for his system, and then one of them turned him for practice time violations when he made them practice more than the allotted time, just like every other school in the country.
ETA: I don't remember if he tried the 3-3-5 at Mich, but if he did, he shouldn't have.

He actually recruited a few great defensive players but none of them could get admitted.
His time at Michigan was pretty crazy. Dude would go 6-0 to start the season and then goose egg the back end of the schedule.

He had 3 seasons at Michigan, which is about the absolute minimum necessary for a complete stylistic retooling of a system. It didn't help that he was breaking rules, trying to get it done.

Well no wonder he lost so many games. He kept getting penalties called on him for too many men on the field
ETA: You corrected yourself.

Curse of WV, aka I wished him to lose every game he coached there.

The athletes that were at UM were a different style that didn't match what offense he wanted to run. Zona had players already in place to make his system work...
