Why are MLB games often played in the afternoon on week days?

A ton of people are at work. How does this make sense from an attendance standpoint?

I think it's a travel thing in the CBA to get to the next city. Also, I think northern teams may do them in the day early in the season case it's still cold.

I don't think 'often' is the right word. It definitely depends on what city/climate you're in.

Teams like Chicago, Boston, NY have big enough fan bases that it doesn't matter when the game is played, they're going to have a decent crowd.

Also this. If a team has to fly somewhere for a series out of town a day game is a better alternative.

The target audience is old whites. Baseball assumes most of them are retired, which seems to be correct.

Then they can draw the "family fun day" types and it makes a decent crowd.

Once the opening week is over you're going to see a reduction in the amount of day games. Typically there will still be a few on Wednesdays and Thursdays so teams can get an early start traveling to their next series.

Also makes sense from a TV point of view, they can have games on at 12, 3, 6, and 9 CST.

For instance, the Phillies play today in Cincy...tomorrow they play in NYC. If they played at 7pm, game ended around 10, best case scenario they leave Cincy around 11-11:30pm...get into NYC around 2:30 because you lose an hour. Have to then get from the airport to the hotel. They would literally be going to sleep around 3:30-4am. Sure, some players like to hoodrat, but that's still very late.

What? The target market of Major League Baseball generally consists of males between ages 18 and 49

Most teams in large metro areas have no issues supporting attendance for these day games.

You're probably correct in that this is their target, but the median age I believe is 55+ of the average fan and rising.

This only usually happens on Wednesday or Thursdays which are what they call "getaway days". The teams will usually have a series starting in another city the next day and have to fly out there. No one wants to be flying to the next destination and arriving at 2 in the morning.

It amazes me that kids these days have no idea what a "get away game" is about.

no, it actually isn't. Their job is to play baseball. I don't' believe there's any verbiage in their contracts that state if a minimum number of fans aren't present then they get the day off.

Social media, daily fantasy and streaming online has increase the popularity each year. Not to mention the league has gotten much younger.

Haven't national ratings fallen significantly?

A getaway game is where you bet the under. Lots of first pitch swinging going on in those games.

The topic of MLB's health is always skewed on here because Louisiana doesn't have a team and most of the posters have no context. MLB is enormous in the most populated parts of this country.

FOX and ESPNs ratings increased last year especially in postseason play. It may have decreased in past years (2012-2013) but like I said, with the game getting younger it's only on a upward trend
