My understanding is that the older NASCAR fans (mostly the old Petty and Earnhardt fans) hated JG because he was so young and already driving for Hendrick (with the best crew members and equipment). Back in the 70's and 80's, the young drivers typically had to work their way to the best teams.

JG was also not the prototypical NASCAR driver. In a sport full with a flush redneck fan base, Gordon wasn't really that. He was kind of an outsider and came in and started dominating the "good ole boys". I think this fueled a lot of the hate for him from fans.

Gordon also broke other "norms" that the old boys club of NASCAR was not a fan of. He was too "corporate" in that he didn't fit that good ol' Southern boy mold. He was from California via Indiana. The rainbow colored car was too "pretty". Jeff just didn't fit the stereotypical mold of a NASCAR driver...yet he was beating all of their heroes.
