I've heard that Pete Maravich and Dr. J played a few exhibitions for the Hawks together (when the Hawks thought they had the ABA rights to Dr. J).

Correct. They played two games together before the courts sent Doc back to the Nets. Doc said Pete would always find you if you were open, and that he always remembered that (very) short period fondly.

Ironically, the only team to actually draft Dr. J was the Milwaukee Bucks, and he never played a game for them.

Ted Williams. The way my grandpa spoke about him convinced me he was some sort of wizard with a baseball bat.

I'm old enough that I've seen most listed with the exception of Ruth, Cobb, etc.

I got to see Ted Williams at the very end of his career for a couple of years. I would have loved to see him in his prime.

Imagine if you had an outfield of Aaron, Clemente, & Mays on a team. Scary.

This thread makes me realize how lucky I've been. Some of my earliest sports memories were of Lakers/Celtics, I vividly remember the '86 Masters & my dad telling me I was witnessing history. I remember him falling asleep before Gibson's HR against the A's in '88. I saw the rise and primes of Jordan, Mike Tyson & Tiger.

Actually one of the best athletes of his time in the world.

His 1967 USC Track Team shattered the world record in the 400 relay. Simpson was a world-class sprinter.

It took 25 years for a collegiate team to improve upon their record.

4 sports figures my Dad always talked about:

Paul Bryant
Pete Rose
Pete Maravich
OJ Simpson

Those were the GOATs if you ask him

Ted Williams and Sandy Koufax would be my top two. My Dad actually saw Koufax in Houston the first year the Astrodome opened (SRO crowd).
