Is this for protection?
So they can't grab your face mask?
Or is it just the new "thing"?

I could see it's benefits aside from looking cool, but it seems the Giant's D-line were two years ahead of everyone else, and then this year you see them everywhere.

ND started doing it this year because Justin Tuck did it; not sure about other players

Harder to grab his facemask and fewer eye pokes are the first 2 things that come to mind.

Justin Tuck asked for a facemask that would be impossible to grasp because he had a couple on neck injuries from lineman throwing him down by his facemask. Now it's the cool thing to do.
