What was Peterson doing on that final regular time play

I've watched the replay of that catch about seven times and it seems to me that he was going for the interception instead of just punching or batting the ball away. Why do professional cornerbacks continue to fall for this routine? Why always try to go for the interception instead of the smart play.

Looked like he was trying to knock the ball forward. Probably thought he would have help underneath.

He lost track of where the receiver was, kind of like a basketball player not boxing out.

Looked like he was high pointing it to knock it down. That receiver is pretty tall and one of the best athletes on GB's team, and he had a running start, you jump higher with a running start compared to jumping vertically. Janis made the play and got the ball, i don't think Pat did anything wrong.

It wasn't a good play by the Cardinals' defenders, but the receiver went up and caught it at its highest point. Just like Richard Rodgers did against Detroit.
Pretty amazing plays by the Green Bay receivers on those two Hail Marrys

I don't know what you were watching, but it sure looked to me like Peterson was trying to spike the ball, a la volleyball, but the receiver was able to get higher and catch the ball before the spike. Peterson was at a positional disadvantage because he had no momentum to put into his jump. He did exactly what he was supposed to in that situation. He got beat by a player who made a once in a lifetime play.

Summary:
It was not his fault.
The receiver is tall.
The receiver is the most athletic player the team.
Although the receiver is fourth string, it is only because he has not been given the chance. He would be All-Pro on any other team.
Someone else blew the coverage.

Collinsworth talked about how they did it in the Detroit game. Instead of running into the endzone and waiting, you run to the 3 and then start backing your way into the endzone so you can use your body to push the defender back.

Yeh the defender being at a standstill waiting on the ball seems a lot harder to make a play then having the receiver running under it. Also, it looked like he actually did deflect the ball and it bounced off his own leg

You're trying a little too hard.
Janis is 6'3" 220lb, he's 24 years old, runs a legit 4.4 and has a 38 inch vertical. Those are facts, he probably the 2nd fastest player on GB's team behind Shields.
If you had to send a WR in just to catch a jump ball, would you really pick James Jones' hoody wearing corpse, or 5'10" Randall Cobb over that guy? No-one is saying he's a good WR, but he made a great play, a really athletic play. What should Peterson have done differently? He just got beat, he didn't do anything wrong.

It was just a smart good play. The throw was more impressive than the catch, in my opinion.
I have a huge mancrush on Rodgers.

Seems to be the right strategy because it's working
