The one with best cover guys, but bad upfront people so get burned occasionally and terrible run support.

The one that is solid coverage skills decent run support. They're steady don't give up big plays.

The one that plays only 2 basic sets extremely well and gives up nothing big due to DL getting great pressure causing ints etc

How is it confusing? It's an opinion question.

I guess another way to ask is...

Do you want super talented guys but can't stop anyone? Or guys who play as a group but no superstars? Or mix of both?

WRs get open eventually no matter how good the secondary. You want a strong front 7.

This if I have an elite defensive line and decent LBs.

Line Revis and Sherman up without an even average pass rush and they will get beat.

Look at what Carolina has done and that is what you want to build.

The title had me thinking I'm about to build a DOMINANT secondary. The content of the thread is much different.

But to answer your last post, I rather have a mix in college. From watching the SEC, it seems that a good mix of players on a defense will suffice. You need a front 7 who can pressure the QB. Without that, you better have STUDS in the secondary. And even then, it might not be enough. The QB has to feel pressure, whether by dominant players or scheme. Alabama's best pass defenses were all during years where QBs shite their pants from jump street. Alabama did it more with LBs and corner blitzes than dominant rush ends and DTs.

I rather have a defense with a couple reliable guys in the front 7 who put pressure on the QB and a secondary with a couple pretty good cover guys....with solid but nothing special guys sprinkled in the rest of the defense.

With all that you mentioned, they had a d line that consisted of:

Mingo
Montgomery
Johnson
Ego
Brockers
Logan

Cover corners, a hybrid nickelback, a run support safety, and a cover safety.

So basically what Alabama attempts every year. Even with the level of recruiting they're at, it's still hard to build a perfect secondary. LSU has gotten close though.

It's interesting to watch the two defenses when they're really good. They get it done in completely different ways......but they both get it done.

So is a Defense good if they don't give up big plays, but get scored on. Or is a Defense good if they give up big yards but no points.

ETA: The oSu 2011 argument is what this is basically.
