What happened to the Lakers?

I look at the Lakers today, and really wonder how this team got so bad. For most of the new millenium, the Lakers were one of the best teams in the NBA on a consistent basis. I'll never forget the early 2000's when the Lakers dynasty was in full swing. Shaq and Kobe were one of the best tandems in basketball history.
Now Kobe is burned out and about to retire, and unless the Lakers can rebuild with some solid players in the post-Kobe era, I see some lean years ahead for this team. It's apparent that the Clippers and Lakers have switched fortunes. For many years, the Clippers struggled while the Lakers were one of the best for many years. Times definitely have changed.

Kobe became greater than the organization itself. It was doomed after that.

For years they blew off the draft and only cared about poaching free agents. Kobe scared off all free agents. Now they have jack shite to work with.

the real answer is terrible management with jim and jeanie buss and the chris paul fiasco

that was far from a big time free agent signing in which he was brought on the team to be the big time player

if kobe scared off all the free agents, how come the lakers were able to have an off season like the one they had in 2012?

When you are winning you usually get lower 1st draft picks .
Outside of the 10th pick in 2005 they picked Bynum .
What great picks did the Lakers ' blow off' ?

They decided to go with Dantoni as opposed to Phil Jackson

Testament to the Lakers greatest that they can't possibly have a rebuild / down period .
They had a great plan getting a PG like Paul & maybe keeping Dwight ' Coward' ( words of Ice Cube) happy & looking to the future .
The League blew those plans up.
Howard wasn't happy in Orlando , L.A. nor Houston.
All Kobes fault.

lol nah
How many Championships have the Clippers won? They might have gotten better, but they sure as hell didn't "switch fortunes".
I still blame David Stern. Chris Paul would be playing for the Lakers and likely Aldridge.

Sorry, in addition to free agents they poached disgruntled Stars from small market teams, like Pau and Dwight. The management cared about attracting star power. When the star power stopped coming, the lakers were left with their dick in their hands

Funny, that hasn't stopped the Spurs from killing it in the draft.

Cuban and some other owners had the commissioner's ear and talked them out of the Chris Paul trade because CP3 would have gone to the Lakers and Pau Gasol would have gone to the Rockets. They figured sending CP3 to the Clippers would keep him irrelevant as long as Sterling owned the team.

The trade was cancelled because the Pelicans were owned by the NBA and Dell Demps is an idiot.
