Hiring from within ran its course up there. They had a nice run of good coaches without ever having to go outside the program when they had to make a change.

Mostly Chip Kelly. But they also couldn't find/develop a QB for anything. Atleast not to the level that they were accustomed to. They kept going after transfer QBs that either weren't effective or couldn't stay healthy

And when you don't have an Uber elite offense anymore, all those years of ignoring defense comes back to bite you

I think they have a great opportunity to be very good again with this new coaching staff.

Yeah they went full LSU at QB identification and development after Kelly left.

Their bandaid JUCO kids couldn't keep the wheels on and their D wasn't ever intended to be anything but serviceable.

They'll be fine, Taggart is a good coach and he's put together a solid coaching staff. He's killing it in recruiting already.

Taggert has this program back on the right track. Jim Leavitt will help improve their defense this year. They are top 5 in recruiting for 2018.

They will be serious contenders again sooner than later.

I liked Oregon. They were fun to watch and I always rooted for them in the PAC 12.

Stats wise, their offense was just as effective in the post Chip Kelly days but their defense was horrible. It's as simple as that.

Less talent on defense= worse defense

Chip Kelly & Marcus Mariota went pro.

And current SEC commissioner Greg Sankey hammered them with heavy recruiting limitations. Which is pretty significant when based in Eugene, Oregon.

ETA: I like Willie Taggart, but come on...Peterson is one of the best in college football.

Why is everyone saying QB development before horrible defense? Their defense last year may have been the worst I have ever seen.

Don't know (and don't really care). I guess Chip was just that good. He has a Jimmy Johnson quality about him in that he doesn't care anything about his personal life (relationships) and puts work first and foremost. Of course he didn't produce the championships Jimmy!

With that said, I hated their dumbass uniforms and stupid designs/combinations. I also cheer for the demise of South Oregon U in Waco with all their uniform crap
