I went to a public middle school in La and everything started in 7th grade ~ 1994 era. Im hearing kids start school team sports in 6th grade in certain areas. Did things change over the last 10 yrs or is this not widespread?

Middle school in Ohio is grades 7-8. Team school sports start in 7th, and at that point they must follow OHSAA rules. Anything prior to that is rec, travel or AAU ball.

I don't really know what you're asking but we had middle school teams called "junior (insert high school mascot here)" and that started in 6th grade. You play other teams from your grade.

It has been like that in Metro Atlanta for at least 10 years

I remember playing basketball for the 5th grade team when I was in 4th.

It went 5th-8th for basketball. I'm pretty sure it was like that for track too. For football it was 7th-8th (baseball as well I believe)

Depends on the school and league they play in.

Most schools are 7th - 8th in Louisiana and they might have a sixth grade team.

Smaller schools generally play 6th-8th, I have even seen 5th graders.

Junior High is not LHSAA sanctioned.

West Monroe used to be just 7th and 8th until they split the junior high. Now there are 3 middle schools which are all 6-8th. Football in all 3 grades, but no sanctioned baseball due to title 9. Basketball only has 7th and 8th for both boys and girls. Soccer 2 teams, track 2 teams, and softball. Softball even has their own field at 2 of the schools. Wish they would make cheerleading a competition team so we could have baseball.

Not to start a whole separate conversation, but I've always thought taking football out of the title IX equation would fix these type of issues.

All schools are different. My brothers go to Albany Middle School and both of them are the only 2 people to play football as 5th graders at that school. One is in 6th grade now and started safety for the 8th grade this past and one is currently in 5th grade now, played a few snaps in a couple 8th grade games.
