What did LaDainian Tomlinson lack to not be considered among the elite RB's of all-time?

Seems like Jim Brown, Walter Payton, Barry Sanders, Gayle Sayers, Emmitt Smith and Adrian Peterson are more heralded.
Tomlinson's 31 TD season in 2006 was the best I've ever seen.

I'm not to sure he is top 5. But his 2006 is definitely one of the top 2 or 3 single seasons by an RB, if not #1. Two different discussions.

He didn't do it at an elite level long enough to be considered elite elite.
