Will the Clemson Era go down dramatically with the departure of Deshaun Watson? Will his backup be anywhere near his caliber?

They have the #1 QB in the recruiting class coming in, so this season might be rough but the future is still pretty bright. That defense is solid.

Dabo is fully reliant upon his coordinators. If he losses them, then the program would decline quickly. Watson was already Watson before the OC left for SMU this off season (although unlike OSU's OC, Watson didn't have a steep decline after Morris left)

I like the way Dabo leaves the power to his coordinators but if they leave him high and dry may be a different story

So do any of you think they make it back into the playoff next year?

I think when you go into a new year you basically say who is likely the best team or two in each conference and then go from there. to me in the ACC TODAY it's FSU and everyone else next year. In the B1G it's probably OSU/PSU, the SEC it's Bama and then everyone else until someone proves they have the mettle, PAC is USC/Washington and Big 12 is OU/oSU. So I would have Clemson right around 8-10 based just on that.

TLDR; I think FSU is my pick from the ACC as of today

no, but that's not some sort of bad thing for the program

they'll be back in 2-3 years

Dabo has 6 consecutive 10 win seasons. So no.

Clemson has Hunter Johnson coming in this spring. He is the #1 pro style QB recruit and MVP of the US Army All American game. There are a handful of freshman and sophomore 4 star QBs battling for next year's starting spot.
For 2018 they have Trevor Lawrence who is the #1 recruit in the nation. He's being compared to a Peyton Manning level QB.

Hunter Johnson.

I think they have the #1 QB in this year's and next year's classes committed.

It's not like he's the only good QB Clemson has had. They will reload again.

Saban also had some of the top QB's in the country over the last several years. None of them panned out and they all transferred. That's why Jalen Hurts won the job.

So he is making the same fatal flaw as Gus Malzahn.

Watson is a once a lifetime player. Cousin Clem is going to realize that soon.

And Clemson doesn't run a pro style offense.

Translation - massive transfers about to happen.

So, another QB that doesn't fit the system they currently run. Peyton Manning couldn't run the system Clemson just ran in the title game.

Two #1 rated, pro style QBs and a bunch of 4* QBs - yeah, there's going to be massive transfers and perhaps de-committing. Also, this says he's using a ton of scholarships on QB which means other positions will suffer.

What I gather from this is that Dabo has a dynamic QB and an offensive system that matches up well with Bama, used to obliterate OSU, and won a natty; and he's elected to recruit players for a system he doesn't currently run, that Bama typically obliterates, and other defenses like that Meyer is building at OSU, Harbaugh at Michigan, UF, and most other top defenses in the country all do well against.

The man is retarded. He sounds like Bill Curry and his decision to put in the option when he had Tim Couch as a QB.

Congrats Clemson, hope you can wait another 35 years.

They were good before he got there. Dabo has two other stud QBs committed. They'll be fine.

Johnson tested out at a 4.73 40, and a 37 inch vertical. He is a phenomenal athlete who can run very well. He will fit fine in Clemson's system. Dont let the buzzword "pro style" fool you

Clemso returns 4 of 5 OL next season. They are stacked at WR, have former 5 star Feaster at RB and lead for next years 1 RB. As others have said, they have the number 1 QB, coming in back to back classes.

On D, they lose 1 starter off this years D. I read that while they played two true freshman,a lot this year, they redshirted 1 five star and 14 4 stars.

Watson might end up being the only QB to get them another championship, but with the talent Dabo keeps signing at every position, I don't think you are going to see Clemson go away

Remember, Dabo won 10 games and an Orange Bowl v OU with Cole Stoudt.

Is Clemson switching to a more pro style o?

I never get why a coach that has a spread would go after pro style guys. Urban did it at UF, Gus has done it at auburn. Les did the reverse at LSU go dual threat type and put in pro offense

Six straight 10-win seasons
Back-to-back CFP appearances
3 ACC championships in the last 6 years

Not to mention the talent that's returning on defense and offense outside of Watson. Will we be back in the playoff? Unlikely, only one school has been three years in a row.

But to expect Clemson to fall off the cliff because Watson's gone is too short-sighted
