Construction for the 18,000-seat Chase Center in San Francisco’s Mission Bay is underway. The project officially broke ground yesterday afternoon. The arena is scheduled to open for the 2019-2020 NBA season. “No longer will San Francisco stand alone as the only American city of its size with no indoor venue of 10,000 seats or more,” Mayor Ed Lee said during the ceremony. He said the arena is the only 100% privately financed arena in the country and will not be using city money. The Warriors are paying for the venue and purchased the land.

The arena includes three acres of open space and 5.5 acres of public park along the waterfront. The 11-acre site will include restaurants, cafés, offices, public plazas and other amenities lacking in the area. Cushman & Wakefield’s San Francisco office will be in charge of leasing restaurant and retail space.

Good lord 1 billion for an area seems absurd

I am sure the majority of that cost was the 11 acres of land on the waterfront in San Francisco.

By 2020 the warriors will just be meh.

You totally blew the lead here. The groundbreaking turned into a literal circus

Yet there are little kids that are sick and need medical help, but we are worried about building a $1 BILLION stadium for people to watch a sport.....
Blast me all you want.... but think about it 1st....

Five years from now we will be reading articles about how the taxpayers got fleeced somehow and ended up paying for 90% of this project.

Hey dude..... what's more important??? Feeding people or building a fricking arena???????

Yeah an arena for 1 cool billion seems insane
Guessing sizable portion of that will be the retain/shops/infrastructure for the site, though

Then get upset with the government for being inefficient. Not private investors.

I have to admit this area is going to be great with AT&T Park & this new arena right down the street from each other. All kinds of new development & new places to go out before, during, & after the games is going to be nice. The problem is they are going to continue to price the regular fan out.
Prediction: Most of the tickets will be bought out by Tech companies & other corporations so the crowds will majorly suck compared to the crowds in Oakland. Do they care? Hell no.

Can't wait to watch Houston lose road playoff games there.

Good lord, a billion for an arena seems absurd even for San Fran.. add onto the fact that they aren't a historically strong franchise..

Yep the story here is that it is privately funded
