While nothing is set, Major League Baseball and umps are expected to discuss a plan — most prominently used in the NFL — for crew chiefs to wear a microphone and explain replay rulings.

Under one possible scenario, they would start at the All-Star Game on July 11 in Miami, tweak the process over the season's second half and then go forward with the experiment in the playoffs.

Joe West and Angel Hernandez are at full staff over this. They get to be wrong, piss off entire fanbases, and get even more attention than usual.

Someone beat me to it. Joe West should sit on a live grenade and hope it hatches.

I don't know why MLB thinks the playoffs are a good time to experiment with rule changes.

This is dumb. Umpires need to have no communication with fans. Explaining a call to a manager is one thing, if necessary. The fans won't like the explanation most of the time anyway.

This commissioner is killing the game.

"The runner's foot hit the base before the ball was caught" do we really need this explained.

It's a good thing that adding an explanation to an already existing replay isn't a rule change.

I'm having a hard time thinking of a baseball call that needs an explanation.

One example would be a play at second base as to whether or not the slide rule was in effect. Play the other night happened where slide rule was enforced but second baseman never touched second. Apparently the slide rule would supersede player not touching the bag. Ump giving that explanation would be nice.

Another would be where they are placing runners on a potential fan interference and why.

This. Especially since replay is already a thing.

How the ump determined the call will be self evident.

Think this is just MLB adding to the product and being first to market in this.

This is a really neat feature that will enhance the fan experience of baseball.

I expect NBA and NFL to follow.

Unnecessary

Absolutely necessary, IMO.

These idiots have blown countless calls already this season, even with the benefit of review. I want to heat their explanations for this shite.
