Now that Harper is bouncing back it appears from his bad season, who do you take for the next 5 seasons? Assuming same salary.

I think you have to still take Trout but it's very interesting IMO.

Trout

Harper is great and supremely talented and there certainly is a nonzero chance he surpasses Trout, but at this point I don't see how you could take anyone over Trout. Harper is closer to 3 than 1 in my opinion.

Trout has had the best start to a career of any player ever. You take him.

Mike Trout has amassed 47.5 WAR over the past 5 years or an average of 9.5 WAR per season, his lowest season is 7.9 WAR. Bryce Harper has had one Superstar season in 2015 when he had 9.9 WAR but other than that he hasn't had any superstar seasons, his next highest WAR season was 4.6

May I ask why? It doesn't appear to be defensible on the numbers. Not that Harper is a bum, it's just that Trout is Ty Cobb'ing it.

Trout.

If he keeps this shite up, he'll be in consideration for best player ever. He's doing god like shite on the baseball field.

This debate comes up every April/ May, come September there is no reason to even ask the question.

it actually is

It was essentially a coin flip in 2015, I believe Harper was worth slightly more WAR, and now we are back to where Harper is literally getting on base almost half the time while running an ISO over 340 and is walking more often than he strikes out

What he's doing at the plate right now is legendary and he's not a liability out in the outfield

Interesting. Who would you put at 3 (sticking to everyday players so Kershaw is out)? I would probably say Arenado right now but Machado and Lindor are also close.

Trout, I don't think it's close.

Fair enough. I'm certainly not going to say you aren't entitled to your opinion. I wouldn't say it has ever been a coin flip, though. I think Trout's all-around game is pretty amazing.

I think the counter to that is that 2015 is the ONLY season it has been a coin flip (until the first month of this season).

I'm not going to argue against someone taking trout. I'd just rather have this Harper if I had to choose between the two

You basically hope Harper can play like Trout plays every single year.

That's why I asked instead of calling you an idiot or whatever. I think it is close enough that reasonable minds can disagree, even though I don't think there will be much disagreement.
