It serves a purpose but the end goal can be attained in a less fun and potentially less psychologically damaging.

On May 23, 2014 a parent of a Marching Band member visited the Office of University Compliance
and Integrity and reported that she had concerns about whether the Marching Band’s culture was
sexualized, and stated that its members were made to swear secrecy oaths about objectionable
traditions and customs. The parent specifically described an annual tradition of members marching
across the field in their underwear under the supervision of the Marching Band directors and staff,
including Jonathan Waters.

The information provided by the parent constitutes a complaint under the university’s Sexual
Harassment Policy 1.15 and Title IX; the parent requested an investigation of these issues, which
implicate university policy and federal prohibitions on sexual harassment and raise the possibility of
a hostile environment in the Marching Band.2

And there yah go. Title IX.

You're blaming Title IX because a parent didn't want their kid marching in their underwear?

It's obviously "sexual harassment" on a certain level.

And in this day and age, it can't be overlooked because this kind of thing will happen. It's just a good reminder of what was ok even 10 years ago, doesn't fly anymore and one has to put a stop to any borderline behavior.

It's just a shame this guy is losing his job for something that is probably 1000% more mundane (not to excuse it) than what the band did in the 70s, 80s, and 90s.

I'll take you at your word but it does sound like you are trying to excuse it.

Parents shouldn't be dealing with their kids problems when they're in college.

Even potential sexual harassment?? That is a dumb statement.

Marching band is typically, at least when I was in it, a class with credit, not just an extracurricular. It may cause some more issues? I dunno.

We did some similar type stuff when I was in band with lyrics and antics and parties. It eventually brought the band closer together. However, it looks like it may have crossed a line at tOSU, especially with the sibling stuff. That is a bit much.

So if your 19 year old daughter comes to you and says "daddy I feel like I'm being sexually harassed" your response will be "take care of it yourself?"

Also, who reported the issue has no bearing on how bad the problem is and what the University should do to correct it.

You have to be an idiot to march in your underwear. and you need to be an idiot, in 2014, to allow this sort of behavior. Screw em fire his butt. You can't do these things any more.

No more panty raids in girls dorms at LSU type things (Thongs?)

Skin to morons that go thru rush and get spanked whatever.

I went to one band camp in Jr High, and the hazing was pretty messed up even then.

Never saw anything that f#%ked up. No marching band is cool enough to endure that.
