It's hard to imagine modern pentathlon gets better ratings than wrestling True, but the athletes who compete in it are filthy rich. Which is why equestrian and its related events will never get cut. Those athletes will keep the money pouring in.

MOdern Pentathalon is championed by Samaranch's son. Samaranch is former chair of IOC. THey are safe.

bullshite IOC politics.

Its such BS this is even being debated. The olympics is filled with crap events and they want to get rid of one of the purest forms of competition. Not that they care or will make a differnce, but I will no longer watch the olympics.

the IOC, they have become FIFA

How are you going to remove wrestling, which was a staple of the original Olympic games

Not only that, but Olympic wrestling is the pinnacle of its sport.

Basketball, soccer, golf, baseball, etc etc......the Olympics is just a fun little tournament. It doesn't mean that much.

Little kids start wrestling to win a Gold Medal.......that is the goal.......that is the highest honor. How can they take something like that away from children all over the world??

The fact that wrestling was part of the ancient games and has been a part of the modern Olympics since they returned in 1896 makes this decision even more of a joke.

Blame NBC, the IOC, et al.

They got rid of the amateur requirement. They started looking at money instead of the spirit and tradition of the games.

Wrestling is one of many tragic losses.

That's my biggest gripe with the removal. A wrestler looks to win an Olympic medal. He doesn't dream about turning pro and winning the championship. There is none of that. No Super Bowl, no World Series. It's the Olympics.

It's complete bullshite that this happened. No other way to describe it.

Whoa whoa whoa....let's not get carried away here.

Seriously though, I'm not a big amateur wrestling fan so this really doesn't bother me. I can see why people are pissed that some other dumbass sports are being kept while wrestling is being thrown out, especially considering the history.

Agree entirely. Plus our own former LSU Tiger Jim Ravannack is the President of USA Wrestling and is with the USA team when they go to the Olympics. I don’t get it. It isn’t very expensive to field a team and there is a lot of participation from a number of countries.

As a lifetime member of the AAU, I'm sick about this.

The IOC is run by flaming liberals who detest anything that they perceive to be "violent, combative behavior." It's the same movement that is currently pussifying football and other sports.

fricking IN.

LSU's wrestling program got killed in the early 80s thanks to Title IX.

I'm less certain about the rest of the SEC but it wouldn't surprise me much if the same thing happened elsewhere.

How did Title 9 do this? Not arguing. Just looking for details.

T9 killed a shitload of wrestling programs because ADs dropped them and used the $$$ to pay for the lead-pipe money losers that are women's sports

wow didn't realize this. His brother, Joe, coached me one summer. I loved his Navy Seals stories. I went on vacation with his family one summer. Great family... and one I would never want to frick with. I assume they have had many of their enemies thrown into the mississippi river. Of course this is partially young fantasy of how big they seemed to be. But also based on Joe being a navy seal and olympic wieght lifter...

I never wrestled, but my brother did and I'm friends with quite a few others who did, including some in college. The training wrestlers put themselves through us unreal, and it's complete shite that it won't be in the Olympics.

And FYI don't ever mess with a wrestler when he's cutting weight

One of my brothers had the good fortune of Wrestling Olympic Champion Kenny Monday while in School. Monday thru him around. Wrestling is by far the most labor intensive sport there is. By far.
