Chatter here earlier in the week was that the GM would be fired / asked to resign at the end of the season.

Stupid IMO, Rossi was stirring shite up the last month of the year like a clown, that guy got hammered on social media bad.

Perron deal was fine, Ian Cole trade was great, Lapierre trade was solid...his moves worked out pretty well.

Ehrhoff was the only real move that completely failed, and at the time, it was the move of the whole offseason getting him for 1 year. Then he got injured and played in under 50 games and missed basically the entire last 2 months of the year...not Rutherford's fault, injuries happen.

Overall I'd give his moves a 7/10. No way does that warrant being fired after 1 year, idiotic.

This sucks. Not just another early exit, but losing to a major rival

That was a fun series. I know hog thinks the rangers played like garbage, but I would say flower and the gang stepped up their regular season spiral to make it much closer.

We will see how the Rangers do in the second round.

Yeah, I've heard that, too, and I don't get it
I tend to agree w/ you. It's a report from a widely read blog coming from "unnamed sources". what gave it credence is the blog never goes out on a limb like this, but when they do they're usually correct; that very day a columnist published a nasty exchange between he and the GM post-game that was apparently off the record; rutherford was obviously not the organization's first choice last offseason; and everyone was so frustrated about being in cap hell down the stretch playing w/ 5 dmen.

the story definitely broke at a time when frustration was high and the allure of change for change's sake was pretty enticing.

but like i said above, they really played w/ more heart than i think anyone reasonably expected in this series, and when you look to next year and see letang and maata back along w/ other potential roster moves you feel pretty hopeful. especially when you consider what are the odds some of the stuff they dealt with happen again? pascal dupuis missing another season w/ blood clots in his lungs? letang getting a concussion in the last 10 games of the season? olle maata missing time w/ cancer then a shoulder injury? big deal for erhoff then take successive injuries? a mumps outbreak? damn the luck.

They are still in cap jail, and it means Martin is almost certainly going to walk. The Pens have $11 million in cap space and 10 roster spots to fill. If they re-sign Martin, that's pretty much their entire cap (unless Letang retires, which I wouldn't rule out).

Still, he didn't create the situation, and he's now about a year away from getting out of it.

We got away with one there. What a terrible giveaway in the zone by Gunnarson.

The Pens said a few months ago they weren't resigning Martin, they even floated his name at the trade deadline. He's gone.

But luckily, defense isn't much of a concern with all the young cost controlled players in the system ready to go. Maatta, Pouliot, Letang, Doumolin are 4 of your 6 defenders for years ahead and won't be expensive. Harrington soon probably as well. Scuderi is signed for another few years for a veteran presence, and they may resign Ian Cole since he's cheap and played very well. LoveJoy is signed for another year as well.

Elsewhere, we'll see.

The top 2 lines are all under contract, Horny, Perron, Kunitz, Sutter, Spaling.

Adams, Comeau, Bennett, and Downie won't be back. Lapierre maybe.

Incredible save from Dubnyk there. Was on the ground and was still able to save it.

I hate the Wild. They always do this stuff in the playoffs. Boring team makes the playoffs as 7-8 seed that presents bad matchup for one of the top seeds. Beats higher seed and never makes a deep run whereas the team they beat could have made a deep run if not for losing to said Wild.

Not like the Wild snuck in. Been one of the best teams in the league since getting Dubnyk.

Eh, Wild were a preseason Stanley Cup caliber team and many picked them to be in contention, they finally put it together the last few months of the year...this isn't surprising and they could easily make a deep run.

Yeah they are better this season. I just don't like them and what they do. Still bitter about the Avs loss last year...
