Giving players the opportunity to chose what cause to support

The NFL informed teams last week in a league-wide conference call that "Pink October" - a three-week window in October in which the league dressed up its fields, sidelines, and players in pink to raise awareness and funds for breast cancer - will not continue in 2017.

Good. There are plenty of great causes that do not get the spotlight that breast cancer does.

Seems like Roger is starting to feel the heat.

Pink October was stupid anyway, breast cancer is probably the only one that doesn't need any more money thrown at it.

Good. About damn time. It was getting to be a bit much, especially when they weren't letting players promote other worthy causes.

Will Black Lives Matter be an approved cause?

What about #NODAPL

Anything political allowed?

Komen Foundation kickbacks must not have been as lucrative as they once were.

I like the idea of a single week of pink in October (3 got to be too much) and another week for the players' cause in November, perhaps tied to Thanksgiving...

The NFL was taking all the "awareness" money anyway.

Nothing against breast cancer but every person has a story of a disease that affected a loved one. Why does that get the most attention?

Everyone has a mom, boobs are great and the NFL wants to bring in female viewers

I get the fund raising angle of it but I doubt much of the money actually gets from the NFL to research. I don't get the "raise awareness" angle, who today isn't aware of breast cancer?. I didn't know breast cancer was a problem until I saw Jared Goff wearing pink cleats.

Good. We all know it was a gimmick by the NFL to gain more female viewers. Also, the way they handled Deangelo Williams situation with his mother was pretty fricking cold hearted

After everybody has taken their cut, only 8.01% of money spent on pink NFL merchandise is actually going towards cancer research.

In other words, for every $100 in pink merchandise sold, $12.50 goes to the NFL. Of that, $11.25 goes to the American Cancer Society (ACS) and the NFL keeps the rest. The remaining money is then divided up by the company that makes the merchandise (37.5%) and the company that sells the merchandise (50.0%), which is often the NFL and the individual teams.

The most popular place to purchase pink merchandise is at the NFL's online shop, official team stores, and at the stadiums. In these cases, the NFL and the individual teams are acting as the retailer.

It is unclear how much of the 50% markup for items being sold directly by the NFL and the teams is going to the ACS, if any at all.

So basically it was another way to re-energize Jersey sales at NFLshop.com during the year like throwback jerseys.

NFL taking majority of the profits followed by the manufacturer.

Great idea to let players pick a cause.

Expect HUGE backlash from women's rights groups claiming this is sexist though.

I knew this would happen. I get surveys from NFL Huddle, which is part of the NFL. This year, there were a lot of questions about the My cause, my cleats campaign. For my part, I answered that I preferred the cleats campaign over the pink. I always thought that the Pink campaign was a thinly veiled attempt to disguise a marketing campaign to increase female viewership as an altruistic gesture.

I thought the cleats campaign was more genuine because the players could choose causes they cared about, not ones that would help the NFL. I also said that my favorite cleats were the ones Brad Wing wore for

There is no reason to pretend that the NFL cares about anything besides making money. It is, after all, a for profit business. That doesn't mean, in my opinion, that the NFL shouldn't allow or even encourage players to support causes they deem worthy or deserving. I think that's okay and even admirable as long as there's not an overt profit motive involved.
