quote:

So, the Phillies didn’t take the best player available?

Probably not, and the Braves, who picked a high school pitcher from New York, Ian Anderson, at no. 3, didn’t either. Both teams got cute and took a less-desirable player in the hopes of saving money for a falling star, like New Jersey prep lefty Jason Groome, arguably the draft’s most talented player, outfielder Blake Rutherford, or shortstop Delvin Pérez.

quote:

Did it work?

In short: nope. None of the big whales lasted that long, and the Phillies settled for California high school right-hander Kevin Gowdy at no. 42. The Braves fared a little better, grabbing two other high school pitchers, left-handers Joey Wentz and Kyle Muller, at nos. 40 and 44, before dipping into the college ranks for University of California catcher Brett Cumberland at no. 76.

Wentz, Gowdy, and Muller are all good prospects, but both teams would have been better off playing it straight. Let’s just use the Braves as an example: They had the no. 3 pick, a sandwich pick, and an early second-rounder, and they got the equivalent of two picks in the teens and a pick toward the back of the first round.

What they didn’t get?—?with the third pick in the draft?—?was one of the top 10 players in the class. I don’t think so, and neither does MLB.com, Baseball America, or ESPN’s Keith Law.

I have zero interest in the MLB draft. Ok so went cheap. I might care if there weren't 100 rounds or whatever

Why is it a disaster though? For those teams, maybe, but I appreciate the gamesmanship that the bonus pool and slotted money provides.

If you want to get cute, go ahead, but you can be burned easily as well.

The MLB draft is pretty ridiculous.

But the Braves used their picks to grab 3 middle-first round draft picks (and will pay them all about the same amount of $).

Say what you want about them only getting pitchers when their system seems pitching heavy but the value is there.

I mean the whole point is to collect as many pieces as possible because you never know who may turn out to be a hell of a player

and if you get too many of one thing or another it's easy to trade the excess

I was talking about that last night. One of the reasons I like it so much is because I understand it and it feels like so few other people do.

My GF thought I was weird for that, but I didn't care because she didn't complain about me watching 5 straight hours of coverage.

I'm always dumbfounded that there is enough money to go around to all of the players, plus the current MLB payrolls, minor league payrolls, and operations. That fact that a MLB team is profitable with so much going on is pretty incredible.

What a fricking clown or clown site. Braves killed their first four picks.

Seems like the Reds who picked #2 did something similar, but with better results. They didn't take Puk, Pint, or Groome, either.

Reds get 2 of the top 13 (Baseball America) Senzel & Trammell.

Remember this, minor league baseball draws as many fans to the park as the NFL & NBA do combined.

Can someone tell me why their draft is in the middle of the season?

After the college baseball season and all the players who sign still report to lower level leagues and get a half year in.

I can believe it, but when you start talking about high A, low A, AA, AAA, etc., plus the operations to run the park and the significantly cheaper tickets compared to the NFL or NBA, then it still is pretty hard to see where the profit originates.

The overhead for a full farm system and MLB club must be jaw-dropping.

he's saying its a disaster because of the ridiculous rules about not trading picks/etc. compared to the NBA and NFL (and nhl I guess) drafts which have enormous buildup and fan interest/engagement, the mlb draft is an afterthought to fans because it's so counter-intuitive and arcane

basically, it's terrible PR that could be fixed easily
