The gap is impressive.

ETA: Not crazy bc there are reasons why the gap is so big.

I came for the long argument on semantic bullshite, and I wasn't disappointed.

To the OP, the gap between the US and the rest of the world in basketball is insane, and I mean that in a fun, colloquial, "message boardy" type of way.

really doesnt change the fact that its pretty unprecedented as far as international competition goes

You are being so purposefully dense. As if you can compare the parity of one sport to the next, regardless of the factors at play.

Basketball hasnt been an honest to god international competition for very long. I mean....we are better at American Football than other countries by roughly 100% lol. Why not bring that up?

in what way? yes, the united states has built in advantages in why it is the best in the world at the sport of basketball. but its not like other countries dont have built in advantages for other sports. the united states is not alone in having advantages for a single sport over other countries. frick dude, baseball is a perfect example of the united states having multiple built in advantages without dominating international competition like basketball does. we probably would if we sent our A teams, but the point is in basketball, we dont need to send our A team to absolutely dominate major international competitions

because its not a part of any major international competitions?

Mexico is the current world football champion.

They beat the US in the World Football Tournament finals a few months ago.

The American team was full of division 2 and d3 players.

So let me get this straight. It's CRAZY that the US is better in a sport that was invented in the US; for much of it's history has ONLY been popular in the US; and today remains far more popular in the US when compared to the rest of the world? Wow, that is crazy!!!! What are the odds?!!!

take huge population + giving a shite about the sport = success

The only country close to us in population that give a frick about basketball is china, and they are on average 4 inches shorter than us.

The United States, due to population and diversity, will always be the best at the sports that people care the most about.

This is not going to be am England situation with soccer where they show the sport to other countries and get their asses kicked.

on a talent level yes...but in competition not so much.We don't always win.

Countries such as Spain have given us a solid run for our money.

France is an emerging power too.

USA Swimming has won:

230 Gold Medals
164 Sliver Medals
126 Bronze Medals

Australia is 2nd with 57 Gold medals, the country with the 3rd most swimming medals no longer exists(GDR).
Japan has the 4th most Olympic medals, 20 of which are Gold. Which is currently two more than Phelps has.

It is crazy when you consider how popular basketball is around the world.

Basketball is probably the 2nd biggest sport in the world, and the USA is absolutely dominant. There is no other country that comes even close.

With other sports, whether it is hockey, baseball, rugby, etc... there is always at least a few teams who are competitive with each other.

But with basketball, USA is so much better than the rest of the world that it's insane.
