Anybody else miss it?

quote:

The Blue–Gray Football Classic was an annual American college football all-star game held in Alabama usually on Christmas Day. It was begun in 1939 and held annually through 2001 at the Cramton Bowl in Montgomery, Alabama under the auspices of the Montgomery Lions Club. The game was not contested in 2002 and was subsequently revived in 2003 at Movie Gallery Stadium in Troy, Alabama. However, the game was discontinued because it lacked a major sponsor after that year. The idea for the game was developed by Champ Pickens.

quote:

The format, unsurprisingly given the Classic's name, pitted players who attended college in the states of the former Confederacy, the "Grays," who wore white jerseys, against players who attended school in the northern half of the country, the "Blues," who wore blue jerseys, and also sometimes including players from western teams. Both teams wore gray pants. Only seniors played in this game, because it was their first venture into professional football, as they were paid for their participation.

I remember they had pretty girls dressed in hoop skirts on the sideline, It was a great format that in today's political climate would be an impossibility, but yeah i miss it.

Loved watching that as a kid. I was a little confused at times seeing an Arizona or BYU helmet for the blues, etc.

Another cool CFB tradition that's gone by the wayside, like all the big games being on New Year's Day.

Not really. Don't think I ever got to see it because it was always blacked out and there was no way I would actually go to the game.

It was awesome.

We have a thread every year where we simulate the game.

I used to go every year with my Granddad who was a member of The Lions Club. Great memories.

It was a fun game to watch, but as the number of bowls has grown, it would have died off, sponsorship troubles or not. The players that played in the game came from teams that did not make a bowl game.

I guess you could resurrect it and move it to after the bowl games are played, but then it would get lost in the other games like Senior Bowl - which happens less than 200 miles south.

It was a Christmas Day staple. Now it's just NBA games all day. Problem is now there are so many bowl games you'd have trouble putting two rosters together.

Yes remember it well being on Christmas Day. I would be playing dress up with my new hutch uniform & helmet that I'd get under the tree. Loved seeing the stickers all over the helmets too

Is this the game where the helmets had multiple mascot decals?

I guess The War of Northern Aggression Bowl is a non-starter.
