There are going to be extremely frustrating games where we K 15 times but we are going to hit a shite ton of doubles and homers and steal a lot of bases.

Major league teams aren't familiar with him and don't know how to pitch him. Minor league teams see him for an entire season and get a scouting report.

I really really like Chris Johnson, maybe more than Francisco

Chris Johnson is much more predictable with his stats... should be steady if he gets full at bats. I like him. The infatuation with Francisco is his raw power potential... he has a little E5 potential in him. I don't mind the platoon but I would like better if one outright won the job. Steadiness vs. upside.

Johnson is one of the worst defensive 3B in the majors, any E5 potential Francisco has won't really be an issue between the two. As long as Johnson can hit lefties like he did in the minors rather than he has in the majors we'll be much better off with a platoon really.

Francisco has actually been pretty solid defensively outside of that godawful series in Houston early last year when he made like 4 errors in 2 games.

Yeah, he's seemed adequate/average when I've watched him play. Definitely decent enough to get all the starts versus righties.

Obviously a 1 year sample size doesn't tell you a whole lot, but his defensive metrics last season were mostly above average. I think everyone just kind of overreacted to his early season struggles. Myself included.

Johnson on the other hand has never had anything even approaching an average defensive season at 3B. Mostly because he has no range at all.

I haven't seen Johnson field much but I just love the way the guy swings the bat, might be the only guy on the team that can have a high average with abunch of singles. Francisco just seems like another power bat, maybe I'm wrong

Maybe I should have clarified. When I said Francisco has some E5 potential, I meant he profiles a little similiar to Edwin Encarnacion. He could possibly be a 30+ homerun bat... but that's not something we'd find out unless he wins the job outright. All three are average/below average fielders.

Sorry, Francisco doesn't belong in the same sentence with those two as far as fielding goes, at least certainly not yet anyway. Johnson is like -40 DRS at 3B over the past three seasons, he's terrible defensively, not even close to average.

The same for Edwin as well, he averaged about -12 DRS a season when playing 3B full time. There is a reason he's a 1B/DH now.

As RS mentioned, Francisco has actually been slightly above average overall for his career defensively, but it's very small sample size of course.

I re-read some of Francisco's minor league scouting reports and you're right... though a very small sample size, he's more than average defensively. Now to go along with a Encarnacion type potential bat, why would you rather us be in a platoon? Would it make more sense if Francisco won the job outright so we can fully develop his bat at the bottom of the order?

With that said, there are scouting reports stating is defense is questionable too. He is much heavier than was coming up. So it's not far fetched to lump them all in the same category.
