I am not really in favor of trying to add to this team. I think you are looking at a 75-77 win team. I would not trade Albies, Swanson, Acuna or Maitan for Sale or Archer. If we do make a big trade it should be trading from the glut of arms for an Arenado type.

I wouldn't mind a few additions as long as they weren't mortgaging the future.

If Wieters price comes down enough, I don't think he'd be a bad addition and should finally be recovered from surgery

On the other hand, wouldn't mind trading a similar prospect or maybe bullpen arm to get a young catcher (Barnes w the Dodgers comes to mind).

I think there are some minor moves that could make the team better in the short term that would make the foundation stronger long term.

Rule 5 action today:

IN: Rivero, Pimentel
OUT: Moran, Bird, Miranda

quote:

Drew Silva
Armando Rivero, the Braves' Rule 5 Draft selection from the Cubs, is sorta intriguing. 2.13 ERA, 105 K in 67 2/3 IP this year at AAA Iowa.

Williams Perez released. I know he wasn't very good, but he seems young to just totally give up on.

A guy I talk to , who is a big and informative Cubs fan, hates that we picked up Rivero. Can be an impact pen piece.

Honestly, he reminds me a lot of Juan Jaime. Older pitcher dominating in the minors, with a huge K rating, but no control. Tons of walks.

25 years old. Never that good in 200 total innings for the Braves. Probably wasnt getting better. We have better options at starter, and younger, higher ceiling guys in the minors, and we have tons of pen guys.

Pretty much a no brainer since it opened up a spot for Rivero on the 40.

So does this mean we have 2 Rule 5 picks on the roster in Winkler and Rivero?

Luke Jackson. 25 that's been sub-par since he was drafted but does have filthy stuff. 97-100 mph fastball. Hope he gains control cause I liked Jenkins.

Dont mind it. At least Jackson has an ounce of potential, even though he cannot throw a strike to save his life. Thats not really something that can be said about Jenkins. What we saw was pretty much what we were going to get with him. Someone that cant miss bats, and doesnt have the command to get around that.

Doubful Jackson ever does something, but he can throw hard as hell.

Wieters adds no value to us I the short term because we're not there yet as a team and by the time we get there he will be old and pretty far down the slippery slope we already see him on.

That would be a waste of money no matter the price. Keep that Georgia boy out of Georgia

Yeah I love Jenkins but he is not a MLB pitcher. He had more walks than strikeouts last year. Jackson has a better chance to have a MLB career than Jenkins.

I think Wieters has a little more tread left on the tires than folks think, and he will be fully healthy two years removed.

But I stand by the caveat it has to be the right cost....maybe a 1 year "prove it" deal or something short with and option/buyout.

I'm not crazy enough to believe the Braves will compete for the division this year....but I think they're at the point where developing a winning culture is important.

Just my .02. You make some valid points too.

Wieters will be 31 next May. He just did a one year prove it deal with Baltimore. He is looking for his last big payday since he is a catcher.

he already has 7000 innings on his body as a catcher. Its likely that he will never be fully healthy again, and give you 140 games behind the plate like he did up until 2014.

He's nothing special at the plate, wont be worth his contract, and is right handed, and we already have Flowers signed through this year, who can give the same production at a fraction of the cost.

The top 9 (10 of you include Maitan) seem to be pretty consensus, with the order varying depending on who is ranking them. 11-20 is another tier and then you have about 20 guys pretty close imo. Last 10 guys on your list are org types at best imo, although Herbert, Parsons and Hursh are interesting.
