• When the throw beats the runner by a considerable margin but the tag is high or way late. The umpire just assumes out.

•When a pitcher missed his spot but it's still a strike. Catcher sets up inside and misses by a foot but still on the outer black.

Seems like I see these all the time. Anyone think of any others??

I don't mind these calls like the one last night in the LSU-SC game. If the catcher is going to set up 5 feet outside I'm fine with the ump calling it a ball. It's like the catcher's trying to trick the ump, then gets caught and bitches about being caught. You wanna throw strikes, set up in the strike zone.

Players not actually touching 2nd base on a double play.

That is something they let slide on purpose.

Wut?

A strike is a strike. Why does it matter where the catcher is? And I ASSURE you there isn't any trickery going on.

That pitch was a ball anyways.

as a former umpire I can tell you that it is physically impossible to focus on both the bag and the tag at the exact same time unless the tag is very close to the bag. most calls are a crap shoot, esp when you consider you can't always tell the runner was actually tagged.

in slo mo you will note that about half the calls are wrong or virtually a tie. so the ump uses the arrival of the ball, the position of the glove and the fielder holding on to the ball as his guides.

so if it's done right by the fielders the runner is called out.

No, not by a long shot. Most calls are remarkably accurate.

I'm a high school umpire myself and got into it because of my love of the game (played for 12 yrs, coached for 11), and thought it would be easy. It's not. Calling balls and strikes is a lot harder than you think, and I was shocked by the amount of baseball I didn't know when I went through school. Also, I would prefer behind the dish over umping in the field. There's a lot of crazy stuff that can happen in the field.

Watching MLB games makes me appreciate how good those umps are. Yes they wil "miss" one every once in awhile but they are human. Every pitch and play of every game is evaluated by the league and the umps have to score at least 98.5% (or something close to that) on average throughout the season. How would MSB posters do if they had to be nearly perfect in their professions every single day?

Carapazzi's strike zone yesterday in the Cardinals - Tigers' game was one of the worst I've seen of all time. Granted, he was bad both ways, but he was really bad both ways.
