This is how we used to win the Ryder Cup all the time, boys

quote:

PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla. -- Tiger Woods was there. Jim Furyk is still recovering from wrist surgery but came down anyway. Tom Lehman flew in from Phoenix.

In all, there were 25 players in attendance, including Phil Mickelson, Rickie Fowler, Dustin Johnson, Keegan Bradley and Jason Dufner.

They were all there Thursday night for U.S. Ryder Cup Captain Davis Love III and Jack Nicklaus, who hosted the dinner at his house, not far from PGA National, site of this week’s Honda Classic. On the menu was steak and lobster with ice cream for dessert -- the latter was Nicklaus’s brand, of course.

Even those who have never played in one -- and many players in the room haven’t -- were eager to soak up the experience, and to pick the brain of Nicklaus, who showed off his trophy room full of big game trophies and hardware he’s won on the golf course.

Tiger is the greatest ever.

And unfortunately I don't see the USA taking it back from the Euros anytime soon.

In fairness, I think most American golf fans want them to win back the Ryder Cup.

But did anybody else have all the potential players at their house serving them their own brand of ice cream? I'll hang up and listen

and from counting up on his Wiki page, 19 runner ups.

That's 9+ full years of majors finishing 1 or 2, over a span of 24 years.

Woods' majors only spanned 11 years

Jack won more majors, was good enough to compete in them for 2x as long, and about doubled Woods' in 1sts + 2nds.

pretty obvious which one was better

Yup. And to be fair it's not really that close. But I will say that what tiger did in 2000-2004 was the best run by one player in golf history and will never be matched. But that doesn't put him in jacks category.

Tiger clearly had the best peak and Jack the better career.

What Tiger did for 4-5 years is the GOAT stretch. He was the most unstoppable golfer the sport has ever seen...for that stretch.

Lets not forget Tiger winning US Junior Amateurs and US Amateurs every single year before going pro and winning the Masters at 21 in dominating fashion. He was a dominant force from birth to divorce.

Simply put, the American teams don't play team golf well enough. They need guys like Rickie Fowler, who thrives on that environment, and embraces the big moments. Not guys like Furyk who overthink everything they do.

it's America vs the world.

we're still competitive but the present team alignment was done because the US was so dominant and they adjusted to make it more even. one can make the point that they overadjusted because the format is used much more in Europe et all and there are many more top golfers in Europe than previously.

maybe we should get Canada and mexico too.

I agree with that.

And there's a huge gap from those 2 to #3, whoever that may be.

Golf is pretty much the only sport where I consistently rooted for the chalk. Loved Jack as a kid and Tiger as an adult.

Spieth

Bubba
DJ
Reed
Koepka
Kisner
Mickelson
Walker
Thomas
Furyk
Kaufman
Maybe swap Kuchar for someone. I want a bunch of young guys in there. Most of the old fricks have just been consistently losing these things.
