Terry Bradshaw/Phil Robertson

Question for someone in the know:
Did Robertson walk away from football knowing that Bradshaw was going to eventually supplant him as the starter?
If Terry was a freshmen was he was Phil's backup and got playing time, I am curious if he was promised the starting job going into his sophomore year. Phil gets pissed (think Tom Brady and Drew Henson)
I have read what Phil has stated in the past about how Bradshaw was his backup, and he walked away to be outdoors, but I was curious if someone in the know can shed some insight outside of Robertson's.

Could true freshmen even play back then? I remember Pistol Pete couldn't play varsity as a freshman.
