My wife has been playing a lot of tennis lately, and I want to get her a nice new racquet for Christmas. I see Head and Babolat seem to be some of the better ones based on price. I don't know the first thing about tennis so any help would be appreciated.

It's really all personal preference. Hard to recommend something without knowing someone's game.

I made fun of Babolat for having like 30 racquets and not knowing where to start. A rep was nice enough to respond with this:

quote:

Begin with the family:

Pure Drive - Our highest power line that also offers a great deal of versatility
Pure Aero - Not as much power as the Pure Drive, but still a higher than average power level, and most notably, high spin potential
Pure Strike - Less power than the Drive & Aero, but more control, response/feel, and precision in your shots.
Pure Control - Our lowest power line with the most feel & control.

Then, you can dive into each family.

Standard (no name after the racket) - This is the standard model from each family and will offer the most balanced experience within that family. There is typically only one standard in each family (Pure Drive, Pure Aero, etc), except the Pure Strike, which has an 18x20 & 16x19. The 18x20 offers more control whereas the 16x19 is more power & spin.
Plus - These are the extended length versions of each racket that are 27.5". The extra length offers more power, though the maneuverability suffers.
Tour - These are the heavier versions of each racket that typically weigh in at about 315 - 320 grams unstrung. Tour rackets offer more heft, more plowthrough, more stability, and more power if you can swing at the same speed as the standard. Of course, the extra weight may slow down your swing speed, and this may translate into less spin.
Team - The team is a slightly lighter version of each standard model. These versions are more lighter and more maneuverable, but you sacrifice power (from the lack of weight), unless you're swinging faster to make up for less weight.
Lite - An even lighter version of the standard model. Again, this is more maneuverable and lighter than standard, even moreso than the Team versions, but with the same drawbacks.

Of course, there are unique ones in each family, such as:

Pure Drive 107/110 - These oversize versions of the Pure Drive are lighter than the standard version but the larger head size offers more power than similarly weighted Team & Lite versions, plus a bit more forgiveness. Also, the lighter weight than standard also provides extra maneuverability.
Pure Strike 100 - This is the lightest Pure Strike model and it has a larger head size. These attributes, plus the open string pattern, give it a bit more spin and forgiveness as well as maneuverability.
Pure Control 95 - This is our most "classic" frame. It has the highest level of control and the lowest power. It also has plenty of feel for those who seek it.

Yeah I figured it would be hard. I just didn't realize there were so many different racquets. I guess I am just looking for a good starting point with brands, and what to look for when choosing one.

I have found the Babolat Pure Drive and the Head Radical pro series to be very good all-around, forgiving racquets. Babolat pure Drives help provide some power that, and no offense to any womenz here, a woman might not be able to generate on her own strength.

Thanks guys. I narrowed it down to that one or the Babolat Pure Strike, and I went with the Strike 100. It seemed to be the most balanced between power, control, and precision. I hope she likes it.

This is the one I went with.

She needs to demo racquets before buying one. She can demo 4 for 7 days for $20 through Tennis Warehouse. They will usually give you $25 dollars off the purchase price when you demo.

After reading this thread, I realize that I must be the only one who spells it tennis racket.

Any clue what racquet head size your wife is currently using? A lot of beginners will start with an oversized racket with 107 head size at least and move down from there. If you went with a 100, there will certainly be an adjustment period to compensate for the smaller frame.

No clue right now. She isn't a beginner. She has been playing for years, but has just recently started getting lessons twice a week. So hopefully the 100 will be an upgrade from what she has. If not then she can unwrap it and return it for what she wants. Right now it's just something for her to unwrap.

I did speak with her coach a few times and he offered little to no help. He kept saying he was going to find out which one to get, but never came through. Now it's too close to Christmas so a decision has to be made.

That would be ideal, but this is a Christmas gift so that doesn't work out.
