Just saying that soccer is going to become even more visible than it already is in this country. That means there is a growing number of people who want to watch.

Oh really? Why are there hundreds of soccer flopping videos like this one all over YouTube?

No different from basketball.

Have you played? I have seperated both shoulders, had my orbital socket broken, cheek bone broken and had my nose broken twice. Many sprains of knees and ankles.

Flopping is an issue of course. Mostly for the Latin side of the game. The governing bodies are trying to crack down and it will take time.

However, there is nothing wrong with being about the fifth or so most popular sport. America has a huge sports space (far more than any other country).

It's not the 5th most popular sport though. Just for pro sports, it's behind the NFL, NBA, MLB, NHL, NASCAR, and MMA. Hell it's behind tennis and golf too. College football and college basketball are definitely more popular. So at best, it's the 9th most popular pro sport and the 11th most popular sport in the nation. Hell if I'm being honest, it's probably behind boxing too.

It's above pro bowling and women's basketball, so there's that.

It ceratinly is. It isn't a collision sport like American football, rugby or hockey. It is more of a contact sport than basketball or baseball.

Your thought process through this paragraph...

"Okay, refute his statement outright. Now throw some of my own thoughts in. Now make up some crap. Make an obvious statement to gloss over what I just said. Show I can do math. Now really drop the idiot bomb on them."

Thanks, I agree. Average MLS attendance is higher than the average NBA attendance. A lot is based on affordability of tickets for sure. ESPN is really beginning to push and you know why? In the male demographic of ages 14-24 professional soccer is second only to the NFL in popularity.

They aren't worried about today. Where do you live?

Cool. The Dodgers are going to get paid over $250 mil a year for their broadcast rights.

Let me know when the MLS gets a single game with over 5 million viewers.

To be fair, comparing the MLS to MLB is like comparing the major leagues to AA baseball. I consider myself a soccer fan, but it's been a long time since I've watched an MLS game. Most of the viewership is towards the European leagues just like basketball fans in Lithuania are more likely to follow the NBA than the Lithuanian basketball league.

Bingo.

It's #5 and rising. It will probably pass hockey in the near future. It will never be bigger in America than the big three, but I could see it getting up there with them. Just look at how much it's grown in the last decade.

It's the world's game, and the more and more we become globalized, the more popular it will become in America.

Yep. Let's also remember that MLS is one of the youngest pro leagues on the planet, and it's already beating the NBA in average attendance.

It was a gimmick for the WC, then it became an elephant graveyard. Now it's starting to become a feeder league for the world. Growth is a slow and steady process, but it is being made.

The orbital socket, cheek bone and one of the nose breaks happened during a corner kick session at practice in high school. Dove for a header and met the goalie's knee while parallel to the ground. At the time he was my best friend too. Oh, and I forgot about the 14 stitches to repair the skin broken above my eye. Made me miss the playoffs.

Soccer is nowhere near the 2nd most popular sport in teens/young adult males

Jesus you soccer fans will make up shite to try and make your sport seem like it's more popular than it really is. MLS is far from a top 5 sport in this country. FAR from it. Hell the MLS cup had a 0.7 overnight rating, which was down from the year before. Hell, the MLS Cup hasn't had a single game draw a 1.0 since 2001.

Yeah it's THAT popular in the USA. shite more people buy above average boxing ppvs than that.

I have a bone in my foot that's been out of socket for like 6 years now. It doesn't hurt anymore and it looks kind of cool so I've just let it be.

Just imagine how quickly soccer would gain popularity if the SEC schools all made men's soccer a division 1 sport. I'd love to watch that.

Read it and weep, idiot.

By the way, this is done by a complex data gathering system powered by ESPN's surveys and statistics.

quote:

Rich Luker, a 59-year-old baseball-loving social scientist based in North Carolina, is the brains behind the ESPN Sports Poll, the complex database that recently pronounced soccer as America's second-most popular sport for those age 12-24, outstripping the NBA, MLB and college football. Luker is also the man who discovered that three soccer players -- Lionel Messi (16th), iconic veteran David Beckham (20th), and Real Madrid's Cristiano Ronaldo (24th) -- rank among the 50 most popular athletes in America.

"Unbelievably, [Lionel] Messi ranks ahead of Dwyane Wade," Luker marveled. "Only two baseball players, Albert Pujols and Derek Jeter, are ahead of him."
