Steve Young sort of admits to not being fully committed to job....or football

Steve Young recently admitted to lacking full commitment to his job as an ESPN NFL analyst. He also seemed to lack a full commitment to explaining that he truly has a full commitment to his job as a football analyst.
The situation emerged from a profile of Young penned by a non-sports publication.
“My wife hates football, and my kids don’t really care,” Young told Alex Sherman of Bloomberg Businessweek. “I see myself as a deal guy first. I’ve put football behind me. Roger Staubach once told me — and I’ll never forget it: ‘When you retire, run. Never look back.'”
Sherman explains that Young “may have quit ESPN years ago if not for his private equity partners, who like him to keep a high profile,” and that Young “spends no more than an hour or two at the stadium” preparing for what he’ll say on the air.
“Once the game starts, he barely watches the action,” Sherman writes..

It’s a horrible look for Young, and for the network that’s paying him to do more than the bare minimum — or to do something other than leverage a platform on ESPN to enhance the nine-figure dealmaking abilities of a private equity firm. It’s no surprise that Young is downplaying his words.
However, his effort to downplay his words isn’t very convincing.
“I participated in this story to encourage athletes to think about their futures because I want to inspire them to think this way,” Young told Michael McCarthy of SportingNews.com. “I have worked hard to build an expertise in two different fields, and I am proud of that. I have built one over the course of 35 years as a football player and analyst. The other, in private equity, I’ve established over 18 years. I’m focused on being excellent at both — and without sacrificing one for the other. Staying connected to the game and working for ESPN are very meaningful to me. In no way did I intend to suggest otherwise.”

Montana > Young > Brady
Montana went 4-0 in Super Bowls and NEVER threw one INT. He stills holds the highest career superbowl QB rating for more than one superbowl at 128.

I don't mind Young at all on ESPN. He has more game knowledge in his left pinky toe than any of the non-football players they have spewing shite on there.
Good for him for being a successful businessman as well.

He had a top 2 scoring defense I think all of those years. Its easy to not throw a pick when you're throwing high % passes in the West Coast offense to avoid turnovers because your defense allows you to play conservatively.
Montana is great, don't get me wrong, but I feel like that defense is forgotten. It was the best unit in the NFL for years.
Full disclosure: Brady had a ballin D this year.

The most innovative offense. Stacked rosters

I'm guessing the job, especially for a former pro QB, isn't really that hard.

Because the game hasn't changed at all since he played.

He's not making the game plans. He's just analyzing.
It's football, not quantum physics.

Really... he could just spew the same generic coach speak answers every other football analyst throws out before the games
They have to be able to protect the QB
They have to be able to get a running game going
They are going to have to move the chains on third down
They may need a big play from their special teams
They are going to have to be able to rush the passer
You could say this before every football game and be considered an analyst

Prepares for less than an hour.
Still better informed and insightful than his garbage colleagues.

I don't get the point of the article.

How much does a guy like Steve Young really need to prepare for ESPN level analysis?
Posted on 2/13/17 at 10:31 am to sicboy
Wasn't there some story about Steve Young not cashing game checks early in his career because he wasn't earning them? I wonder if he's doing the same with his ESPN checks

I'm absolutely positive 49er fans would rather Joe have been 5-2.
