They need to put together a fund so that way they have a way to keep people from crossing the line when their expenses outdo their savings.

They always do.

The problem is only a small portion of the league makes really substantial money that will set you up for life when you retire at 30 and an even smaller portion of them save a substantial portion of that.

All the guys living check to check get absolutely screwed when lockouts happen so they always cave. Tough to have that be the makeup of a group of people trying to take on billionaires.

Even making the minimum, if you play for 8 years and make $3.6 million and can't save enough to take care of you family for 20-25 years, then there is no amount of money that will make you responsible.

O I'm not making excuses for them, they're idiots, but you also gotta remember that the average career is like 2-3 years. They're idiotic 20 year olds for the majority of their careers, not saving shite and just blowing it all.

Yes. Their situation is so dire. Paid at minimum 100s of thousands of dollars in a sports league of which they took NO financial risk to create or maintain.

I love how when asked to decide between millionaires and billionaires, the average American will always side with the billionaire and get upset with the millionaire.

Since owners put a gun to people's head to make them play football, I would think they would be thankful to not get CTE? Isn't that what the money hungry son of bitch ex NFL players sued for having a gun to their head to make them play.

They also get-

Play 3 years, you are fully vested in the pension that kicks in at age 50. Granted it not a good at the MLB pension but getting 40K a year for life isn't bad.

Plus after two years the NFL matches 2:1 on the 401K plan, up to 26K per season. Play more than 4 years the NFL players also gained an annuity plan they can access at age 35. If they have played at least four credited seasons, the league now contributes $80,000 per season, and will raise that to $95,000 in 2018.

I'd say most people get mad at whichever side shut down the league.

I'm not 100 % correct on this, but I think I have the basics

its the Union Boss' fault
the current agreement forces players to contribute but then the NFL itself controls the management of the fund "to assure viability" since its defined benefits

the players gave up a lot to get that 40,000 annual pension, it was done to protect a lot of players from the 70's when the $$ was less and some of those guys were really hurting

the player should . collect voluntarily which should be easier to do with the salaries these days and force REAL free agency

heres the crazy part, what if the owners through the comish have anticipated this and the real reason for deflategate and the inconsistency on punishment was to create a negotiating tool . Give the players more say in discipline in order to keep more control over the $$

Definitely wasn't the case with the 2011 NBA lockout.

I'm 100% in the players'corner next time around. Have a buddy who was in the NFL for several years, he's doing well but he also explained to me the issues the average player deals with. The deck is stacked too far towards the owners and commish in the current system. Players need to go to the mat next go around.

please articulate what exactly is "stacked towards the owners". Playing in the league sure as shite beats what most college graduates do.
